Forget the six points out crap which is really worse than six points like 731 pointed out cause every team above us has games in hand, and because it's multiple teams in front of us and not merely one single team we're chasing.  It's really about hitting a target point total.  92 points is about the cutoff line every year for a playoff spot.  They have 28 points in 33 games, to get to 92 points this team would have to go something like 30-15-4 in their last 49 games.  This team is going to play 15 games over .500 the rest of the season?  Monkeys will fly out of my rear end before that happens.

On the other hand there is another direction this team can take that will be much more beneficial in the long run.

At this point I'm just worried about developing the younger players/having Cory become more consistent and our tradeable vet commodities staying healthy and playing well so they actually have value enough to trade.  Right now it looks like Jagr/Zid are our only moveable assets (if Jagr even okays a trade) and both were awful tonight.  Ryder's been pathetic as a Devil, basically Rolston without the slapshot and probably has zero value left.  Sal's in neverneverland apparently.  Who else is really expendable with any kind of value atm?

The booing is unnecessary plain and simple. What do you expect when the team is comprised of grinders and mid-late 30s former stars? You boo if the effort isn't there or guys are dogging it, that isn't the case with this team. They just suck; it's actually pretty obvious. They have no speed and little skill but they are trying. This happens when your GM makes deadline acquisitions like Kovalchuk, Zidlicky and others and you trade picks. Drafting in the late 20s most of the time hurts too and while I'm not the biggest fan of Conte, his only top pick in recent years has been Larsson, who is seemingly turning a corner. Lou trading off countless picks like Schneider and the aforementioned deals hurts.  Success in team sports is cyclical, be happy that you got 20 years of contending and take your lumps for the next few seasons. This is an unpopular opinion, but DeBoer is one of the only reasons the team hasnt gotten slaughtered the last couple of seasons. The team has/had a lot of difficult personalities like Marty, Jagr, Kovalchuk, Zidlicky, Langenbrunner (yeah, not a DeBoer coached guy but still). You really think the only reason the players have DeBoer's back is because he lets them off easy? People around the league are shocked that DeBoer is on the hotseat because he squeezes every drop out of this talentless lineup

It'll be more apathy as the season rolls on, this was the breaking point IMO. You could sense it before the game when Pete got maybe the loudest boos I've heard him get yet and then five minutes in the life was sucked out of the crowd with yet another early goal. Apparently the ones that weren't booing were brawling down in the lower concourse lol

But seriously though, I have no sympathy for the players. Would the optics have been better if the Washington game was the one that got the boos sure, or if they were able to boo one of the MANY no-shows on the road the last two weeks for that matter. But when you've already missed the playoffs two years running and are out of it by Christmas this year, fans are going to snap. I'm supposed to feel sorry for them getting booed in a game they actually give effort when that hasn't been the case the majority of the season?

And I love Patty but he can go scratch too, he's been maybe the worst player on the team this year this side of Ryder. When management isn't going to hold anyone accountable other than role players and a couple of kids for anything, fans are the only ones that can do it.

.

I love him too but the whining about our fans booing is a joke. Having to see Elias do his patented stare at the ceiling because he didn't score at least 4 to 5 times annoyed the hell out of me tonight. I'm sick of that nonsense.

I can name three games where effort wasn't there this month alone (Carolina, Flyers, Caps).  Winnipeg and Vancouver pre-Thanksgiving were horse**** efforts too.  All games in the last month.  And none of the teams we no-showed against with the exception of Vancouver are really all that much better than us.  They can go scratch.

SH, it's not a good team,. For the last 3 years, they have been the better team on more nights. Lack of offense, bad goaltending, and simply lack of talent has plagued them. I get the frustration, although at this point losing is best for the franchise, but no one has quit on this team. When fans pay to see the Devils play, they are getting players trying to give their best.

I get frustration, but the Devils were getting booed continuously over the last 3+ minutes, right from the drop of the puck.

Who deserves it?

Jaromir Jagr - for still being a great player at 42, but being asked to do way too much on this team?

Travis Zajac - for being an elite defensive forward that just isn't going to live up to the offensive expectations that fans have for him

Patrik Elias - for being 38, struggling with injuries and playing with no one, and maybe just father tie caught up with him

Jacob Josefson? Steve Bernier? Jordan Tootoo? Cory Schneider,?Tuomo Ruutu? Martin Havlat? Sislo? Sistito? Hegelson? Harrold?

I don't see one player dogging it. heir older, They are slow. Nothing comes easy. Some nights they are outmatched, but only a handful of times under Deboer have they came out with no effort.

And Hasan, I see a lot of people giving it to Elias on twitter, maybe for the reasons you just said. It's been a brutal year for him for a number of reasons, but doesn't the greatest forward in Devils history deserve better? Under-appreciated his entire career here, and fans are ripping him apart for saying what he had to say. He just isn't a play driver anymore. But, man, some guys deserve a break for everything they have done for the Devils, for the fans. Elias is one of the best ever, and it's not his fault he is asked to produce like someone a decade younger than him. It really is a what have you done for me lately.

Will anyone care when he gets to 1000 points in a few weeks?

Tom Gulitti @TGfireandice 53m53 minutes ago

Elias: "Obviously, the fans, they were booing. They were disappointed. So were we. Trust me. But, we didn’t deserve that today.."

  1. Oh really? MT @TGfireandice: Elias: "the fans, they were booing. They were disappointed. So were we. But, we didn’t deserve that today."

You can't take anything seriously on Twitter or Facebook, what gets posted there is a hundred times worse than what any fan will say at a game, in person or even this message board.

I mean is this going to matter when Patty's number goes to the rafters no, but let's call a spade a spade, he's basically pulling a Langenbrunner and is more worried about the fans than his own declining play or the team's performance.  Or perhaps taking out his frustration of his own declining play on the fan reaction.

I know it's not a good team, that's why I didn't even boo. The season is already over in my eyes.

But to your point look at Marty last year, he received a lot of disrespect by a good portion of the fans so why would Elias be any different? This is just how it is.

Respect is a concept that has worked its way out of the present day hockey culture both on the ice and in the stands. It's a reflection of the overall change in culture.

And the same idiots who disrespected and bashed Marty are also the same idiots crying for Marty to come back, because CORY SUCKS BRAH!!!!

All Elias is doing is just calling the fanbase ignorant, which he is 100% right about.  Team gave a very solid effort tonight and deserved better both from the fans and the scoreboard.

Again, this was a collective booing.  If you're looking at it as strictly one game in a vaccum then sure the booing was bad timing.  But this team has three wins in twelve games at home and has been dreadful to watch this year with many 'other' bad efforts, on top of two years of missing the playoffs.  If the fans had booed two weeks ago when they put up a crapfest against the Caps nobody would have said a word.  Plus the last six minutes tonight were pathetic anyway, they totally lost confidence in shooting and didn't even try to get shots on net.

It was stupid because the team played their best game in a month, and that's all Elias is trying to say.  You can't will the puck into the net.  And I went to Thursday's game in Philadelphia so I know from bad efforts.

Their best game in a month and they can't score a goal and can't score on a 5 on 3? That alone deserves boos lol

Yeah, sometimes the puck doesn't go in.  Amazing.  They got 11 shots on the power play tonight.  I think they had 15 shots in total on Thursday?  They played a good game.

Im just saying when their best game they played all month is a shutout loss it's going to create some crankiness amongst the fan base.

Sometimes it is more than wins and losses, and context should matter. If everything hit this year, this team was going to be an 8th seed.

The last month has seen 6 or 7 regulars out from their top scorer to best two centerman, to solid role players. It's been a grueling schedule for an already older team. Jagr-Gomez-Havlat was the top line for a few games going against Toews and Tavares. I repeat: Jar, Gomez, Havlat. A soon to be 43-year-old. A player waived by the Florida Panthers last season (the team that finished dead last), and a player that was a healthy scratch last year for his team and bought out. The Devils were in a position where they had to play Gomez 21+ minutes on multiple occasions and Martin Havlat 17 minutes.

Their bottom 6 all produce as well as a crappy 4th line.  Their working in a really young defense.

It's just a team that's talent deprived. The only way it's going to get better is to for them to keep losing. And if they do, I'll be much happier to pay money to see the team that played a great game tonight.

We expect a talented team. We don't have one. If I pay 30 bucks for a train and 30 bucks for a ticket to see us get raped every night, I'll fvcking boo. Elias can keep his fvcking mouth shut.

Exactly. Fans at least expect a team that was as good as last year's. if not, expect boos. The ''when to boo"' is irrelevant after losing so many games by mid-December.

Probably the most worked up I've been this whole season, and it had nothing to do with the play on ice. It's the fans.

The Devils busted their asses tonight. They dominated the Senators. Absolutely dominated them. Outshot them 2 to 1. And the players get viciously booed?

Why? They didn't deserve that. Anderson was excellent and this team is not confident, but it was a damn good effort. Good effort might not be enough to win games, but it should always be enough to avoid getting mercifully booed by the home crowd.

Just brutal.

I think they were booing a fifth straight loss.

This just lacks insight. I don't know what you are expecting from these 'ignorant' fans. You want them to see their team lose five straight games but collectively analyze that "it was the best effort they put up in a month, and that you can't 'will the puck' into the back of the net, and they took a lot of shots, and our team's zone starts were really good, so therefore, we should not boo tonight."

That's not how fans work, anywhere ever. That this still seems to surprise you surprises me.

Can't disagree. Even their good effort is rather ugly and uninspiring. That's not what fans pay for. The team play isn't very good overall. The shots total mentioned earlier is not an accurate picture of effort either. They took a ton of lazy peripheral shots that had no shot at going in. Ottawa had an idea of how to manage the Devils and their minimal capability and executed it pretty well.
