nmigliore
One handed dekes? I hope this franchise isn't turning back to arcadey-like hockey like NHL 99-NHL 2003 were.. I know people use one-handed dekes.. but not too often.. i just hope it isn't overdone.. stay sim EA! dont go back to arcade hockey
elias2600
I am glad there is a new system for playing defense in 09 though. It was difficult to poke check the puck from AI and not have them take it right back. Now I can just block passes. Be a Pro mode sounds great, but not at the cost of them forgetting to update dynasty mode. I hated (loved) how after my second season, patrick kane, phil kessel, and jonathan toews all became UFAs at like age 20. How did that happen? (I signed them). I gave up on poke checks in NHL 08.. it seemed like 75% of the poke checks you did ended up tripping the opposing player and you got a penalty.. WHERES THE DIVING CALL?? But seriously just for more realism - EA should add the 'clear over the glass' penalty and a diving penalty.. also maybe a video goal review, i dont understand why thats not in the game.. I think the only hockey game that had video review was like NHL Faceoff 2003

empulse27
All I know is, the EA franchise has gone down-hill in my mind. I'm one of those gamers who is really into the whole GM aspect of a sports game as much, if not more than the actual gameplay. Here are my thoughts... - Dynasty mode: The same every year. I think EA should check out nhlnumbers.com and actually apply accurate contracts to each player. That would be cool. Also glad they give you the option to turn off CPU trades, because some trades I saw were just ridiculously unrealistic in dynasty mode... - Be A Pro: Sounds like a good idea, but I hope it has depth. FIFA's Be A Pro gives you only one season to play so it took all the fun out of playing as Jozy Altidore. It would be cool for the Be A Pro mode to have features such as "meet with the coach" to discuss playing time or request linemates, or even if the game allowed you to negotiate contracts or let you choose how to respond to the press. Yet, seeing as how this is an NHL game, not Madden, I don't see it happening anytime soon... - Gameplay: Has been far too similar to the year before in every way. Skill stick was a decent addition, but I really like the new defense-stick, dump-and-chase feature and how we can finally separate offensive from defensive line changes. Also, create-a-play seems like a great idea, because I always wondered what Johnny Mac was drawing during a last-minute timeout. As far as checking and fighting go, I just read that there are 300 different animations... wow. Maybe there's a button I can hit while locked up with another fighter that tells the refs to back off... that would be awesome! If not, that could be considered as animation #301 for NHL 2010. - Conclusion: I might actually enjoy the EA NHL series again, but I've said that about some of the past NHL games and really have been let down. Maybe it's because EA seems to always give gamers the best features on their Madden games (that I have really gotten tired of), and I seriously thought for awhile that EA was giving the NHL the present-day ESPN treatment. NHL 09 could change that, but I'm definitely going to rent before I buy... Edited June 11, 2008 by empulse27

britdevil
Ok, I got this post from a guy on a Maple Leafs messageboard. He claims it came from another board, from somebody inside EA. Take it with a pinch of salt, but if half of the stuff this guy talks about is true, then this game will be amazing. From a guy claiming to be an EA Sports honcho Some info about the new "Be A Pro" feature Be A Pro. Okay, most of the NHL Gaming fans are asking themselves some questions about whether or not the new NHL version would include a superstar mode. The answer is no. However, EA Sports has made an even better feature called Be A Pro, which is more dynamic to the game. So what is the goal of Be A Pro? Well you choose or make your own player and you play with him on and off the ice. How do we play off the ice? You watch the game from the bench, with the bench camera, just like backup goaltenders do most of their time. It is the same thing if your take a penalty; you have to watch the game again! What are the Feature of Be A Pro: Create your virtual self: With the creation of last year
elias2600
pretty much everything mentioned in this post was already reported by in other articles or website features. No new leaked info here. Sounds like one of the people from the community that they brought in the try the game and get feedback from.

I wish it was the classic 10 Season mode that was in NHL 2002 for example. I can do the trades I want, not be assed with a Salary Cap, not be bothered with a horrible interface and such. The GM mode is horrible. For GMing I just play NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007. Now if that game was fused with the on ice gameplay of NHL 08 I would be stoked. Banzai Riley
I actually JUST bought NHL Hitz 02 for 2 bucks used. Only problem was, it was Hitz 03 in the box. Oh well, two bucks, can't go wrong. I traded in my original copy of Hitz 02 for 03 at Funcoland. It saved me $4. I would have been better off keeping the damn thing. I remedied that by taking my friend's game, though in my defense, he hated it cause it wasn't realistic. Just cause you can't actually throw people through the glass or light on fire in real hockey doesn't mean it isn't fun. But I wouldn't be mad about getting 03, it's definitely a deeper game with a far better franchise mode. I just have a soft spot for the one with Stevens on the cover. Pronger's just not the same. And there's some serious slowdown and flickering when you have the team lit up, at least on the Cube version. Oh, and thanks for the answer in the thread about the invoices. I think taking out the salary cap would be a horrible idea, I doubt they are even considering that. It would make a huge difference in realism and would make the game a lot easier. I guess they could always just make it an option though. I think if they combined EHM with NHL it would be too much to worry about. I'm happy with them as two separate games. I just wish they still made EHM.
Richer's Ghost
You can already turn off the salary cap option - no reason to think they won't have it the same this year. NHL 2004 had the best dynasty mode IMO - I would sim the entire season - maybe play 2 or 3 games just for fun but the offseason GM stuff was so fun in that edition. It would bump their ratings like 4-10 pts a year based on their potential and your coaches. I remember thats when I became fascinated to see if Camallari was really going to be that good. I drafted him and he vaulted to like a 93 rating inside 3 seasons. I hope they bring that back - it was truly fun.
