Report: Jets caught spying

December 12, 2007

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Apparently, the New England Patriots aren't the only team that uses cameras.

According to a report in Wednesday's Newsday, NFL sources familiar with the situation said that the New York Jets were caught using a video-taping device during a game against the Patriots in Foxborough last season, which resulted in the removal of a Jets' employee.

Gillette Stadium officials noticed the employee recording the game from the mezzanine level between the scoreboard and a "decorative lighthouse in the end zone," according to the report, and asked the employee to stop and leave the area.

The camera was not confiscated by the Patriots or stadium security and the Jets admitted on Tuesday that they did videotape the game and that their employee was confronted.

However, the report states that the Jets said they had permission from the Patriots to film from that location in an attempt to record a second end-zone angle.

"All filming at last year's Patriots game was done with pre-approval from the Patriots and in accordance with NFL rules," Bruce Speight, the Jets' senior director of media relations, told Newsday.

New York played at Gillette Stadium twice last campaign, once during the regular season and again in the playoffs. A source familiar with the Patriots' situation told Newsday that the filming occurred during the first game while a source close to the Jets said it happened during the playoffs.

Video taping opposing teams' signals was brought to the public's attention when Jets security allegedly told NFL officials that a Patriots' employee was recording their defensive signals during the New York-New England game in Week One of this season.

After reviewing the evidence, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell fined New England coach Bill Belichick $500,000. The Patriots organization was fined an additional $250,000 and was forced to forfeit a first-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft.

An NFL source told Newsday that the league office is unaware of the of the incident and that the Patriots did not bring up the situation while under investigation.

sidenote: your niner love reminds me.

Did you know the Pats, while they did lose their 1st rd pick, get the 49ers 1st rd pick? Which looks to be either 2 or 3.

Sounds like what the Jets did was not against the rules as they stood, last year.

Nor do I believe that it would be against the rule this year.

i think the big deal in the rule now is. You can't be on the field, and you can't film the opposing coaches.

Don't think there is/was anything about filming the play, but I may be wrong.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh..... Patriots were playing the JETS when they were caught. Maybe if they were caught after beating the Colts, then yeah, blemish. But come on...... they could have HANDED OVER ALL THEIR SIGNALS to the Jets and still won.

Wasn't the spying really to help in future meetings? I mean, wouldn't they actually use the info after studying the tape and seeing what they called in certain situations and then use that 411 during the NEXT meeting?

So, unless you're not clever enough to change up yer signals a bit, this would not ever realy hurt you.

All the taping really did was give better details to the team as to what your teams tendencies were in various situations.

So, here's a tip. Don't be so friggin predictable!

wah :evilcry: wah :evilcry: wah :evilcry:

Does the entire league need Tearable Towels like the SteelHers?

I don't think this has anything to do with the media trying to take the Pats off the hook and everything with that weasel coach of the NEP trying to take his team off the hook and embarass the Jets in one fell swoop. Is it really a coincidence this came out this week? Screw the scum Patriots.

Of course there are 900 differences between this and Spygate, number one being the Jets asked for permission and weren't exactly sneaking around (and removed the cameras without complaint when the weasel got antsy or picky), number two that it is legal. And number three, what possible advantage can be gained by taping the endzone anyway?

Heard today on the Michael Kay show that even Jimmy Johnson came out and admitted that during his tenure he used video taping. Tony Siragusa as well has claimed that either the Colts or Ravens taped the other teams while he was there. (never disclosed witch)

EVERYONE DOES THIS. Patriots just got caught and the league wanted to use them as an example.
