Would you take a shot at Yakupov?

i wouldnt in the way that there's already rumours about him going back to Russia + he already seem to be going against what the coach is saying. He's young and could improve but throwing lots of assets on another guy who could leave for the KHL fvck that. We've already lost so fvcking much without getting anything in return we absolutely cant take anymore chances.

I'd rather put my efforts on a Canadian/US guy.

Figured you'd find a way to work that in.  Nice job.  :doh1:

I would take him in a heartbeat. Incredibly skilled player who is going through some growing pains like many young players. He led all rookies in goals and scoring last year I believe.

I doubt he is a flight risk. He chose to sign with the Sarnia Sting instead of playing in the MHL (russian junior league) or KHL when he had the choice. He wants to be an NHL player.

I would easily trade Larrson or Gelinas + others for him, even as Gelinas becomes one of my favorite players.

Lol @sterio.

Agree with triumph Larsson is a much safer bet not only to stay long term but to be a better player. Yakopov screams boom or bust (especially if he's flirting with the khl). Plus top end dmen are the hardest to find or develop, while wingers are much easier to grab by free agency or trade.

Let him be somebody else's problem and I'll happily keep the player that is quickly turning into a top pairing d.

It's not about whether he's a flight risk - because of course he is. Burmistrov played in Owen Sound for his junior career.  Now he plays in Russia.  It's another set of teams who are A: always willing to pay more money and B: always willing to offer more ice time.  So if Yakupov feels disrespected in North America he can go play a season or two over in Russia, or maybe just stay there the rest of his career.  I doubt it happens, but the threat is always there at contract time, which would usually mean paying him more than he would otherwise be worth.

Meanwhile if you look at the best Swedish players in the league, almost all of them have incredibly team-friendly deals.

We don't run a system that is conducive to his style of play.  He is worse than Tedenby in the defensive zone.  While he is skilled offensively, he would never work here.  No way I trade any of our top assets (Larsson, Gelinas or Merrill) for him.

We turned Kovalchuk into the league's best PKer and a responsible player in the defensive end. Defense can be taught, offense is much more challenging.

Lemaire turned Kovalchuk into the league's best PKer, while DeBo has struggled with guys who don't fit the system. Also, Kovalchuk, despite all of his flaws, wanted to be coached. If Yakupov is clashing with coaches over system, it's not going to be as easy to fix him.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember Lemaire using Kovalchuk on the PK? I thought that was something DeBoer started doing.

Kovalchuk then abadoned his contract.  DId having to play defense have something to do with it?  I'm not sure, and I don't think we'll ever know that.  I do know that DeBoer's system was not at all suited for Kovalchuk, who does his best work off the rush and who still wasn't very good at taking angles on the forecheck.

Defense can be taught, but it has to be taught to those who want to learn.  If Yakupov doesn't want to learn defense and wants to be a highly paid player, he can be.  That's the thing.  These coaches and organizations can't just sit on Russian (or Eastern European) players until they come out the other end as the player that the organization wants them to be.  They can leave and have similar prestige and just as much cash.

Wow revisionist history. Kovalchuk was far from "the leagues best pker"and was out there for the sole purpose of trying to get a breakaway.

To trade Larsson now when he is finally coming into his own is just foolish. If he keeps this up in 2 years he will be looked at on the same level as subban, and I guarantee you habs fans would laugh at a possible subban for yakopov swap.

No, Josh is right, Kovalchuk was one of the league's best PK forwards over the last two years.  When Kovalchuk was on the ice on the PK, the Devils had 40% of the total goals scored by either team, which is an insane percentage, and they had a very good shots on goal ratio too.  The Devils usually put him on when the 2nd unit was out there but still.

kovy was good in the pk because other teams had to respect his ability on the breakaway. Over a longer period than 1 season I'm not confident that the results would be the same. And deboer knew this too, as he was used as the fifth forward on the pk behind parise Elias zubrus and henrique.

He was effective but he wasn't even used as a top 4 pker on his own team, so how can he be the "best pker in the league"?

That's the point though.  Unlike Kovy, Yakupov (apparently) has no interest in learning to be a responsible 3 zone player, and just wants to go out there and play his game.  We have never been that kind of team and, thankfully, never will be.  Plus, since we have very few top end prospects that we all would assume would have to go the other way in a trade, giving one up on a boom or bust player like Yakupov would be a huge gamble that this francise cannot afford at this point.

Well can you agree that it's the last risk we should make based on recent history? "the russian factor" is something legit we've seen guys dropping in drafts because of that. And Yakupov has been rumoured to be in the KHL as soon as next season per some coach there. Could be nothing but i'd still not throw guys in a trade for him.

He's really good but seems really selfish, knock on him is that he's trying to do everything himself not trusting his teammates, not really a Devils kind of player
