I really am beginning to hate our fans.

Perhaps the fans are part of the reason some guys don't want to play for us. With the You Suck and Flyers Swallow chants maybe some guys just aren't into it. Not that I agree with that but some guys from other areas of the country/world might be more sensitive to those kinds of things. Given the opportunity they'd rather play somewhere else.

Can't see that. Rangers fans booed in half their home games last season, right up until the Eastern Conference Semis right before MSL's mom died. Flyers fans, forget about it. Montreal fans? Remember Carey Price's first few years in the league? People still want to play for these teams.

They're within earshot of all kinds of vitriolic and offensive speech every game. Imagine what kind of stuff from Flyers fans Jagr heard throughout his career before he joined the Flyers, and then from Devils fans while he was in New York haha... Doesn't bother him!

Our college age fan base really sucks. You suck isnt a freakin tradition and sounds retarded. No other teams fanbase is so obsessed on chanting you suck.

You old people are always blaming the under 25 crowd for anything you dislike. At the games I've been to this year, all the idiots I've seen insisting on yelling "you suck" or yelling about how Cory sucks and that they want Marty back have been older guys, 35+ type guys.

It's not just older guys though it's spread amongst the age groups. It's just idiots, not young people or old people, just idiots in general.

Now go back to yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off your lawn.

On an unrelated note, it's absolutely ridiculous to think that players would leave or that UFAs would not sign here because of certain chants. These guys are professional athletes and aren't going to be all that bothered by what the crowd chants unless they're being routinely singled out and jeered by the crowd.

Hate to bring this topic back from the dead but what I heard about what happened at the STH event last night on both FB and HFBoards really burns me up.

The event was basically the fans interacting with players on various different panels.  The panels were usually around 3-4 players each.  From what I heard last night and today, when Salvador went up people, Devils "fans", actually were booing him!  Not only that but a few people were observed getting up and leaving when he went up.

How fvcking disrespectful is that?  These are paying STH who would boo their own captain?  I don't care if you love him or hate him, to do this at a meet and greet event where it is supposed to be a friendly atmosphere is beyond terrible.  I have ragged on Marty here and there throughout the years but I would never boo him at an event like this.  The "fans" that did this are completely classless are rude.  I don't know how I would have reacted to the booing fans, but it wouldn't be pretty.

I wish I could say I am surprised, but I am not.  This is what a decent chunk of our fanbase is these days and I am embarrassed to be rooting for the same team as them.  This is why I really do hate a decent chunk of our fanbase.

Honestly I probably would have just walked away from the whole scene (maybe that's what some people were doing, as opposed to just walking out on Sal per se?) Arguing with a big group of clowns isn't going to be productive at all. But yeah the booing is beyond reprehensible. Especially since it will help ensure fewer player events/less access cause a growing portion of our fanbase is getting extremely low.

I didn't go to the event, but if someone who did go tell me that, I would 100% believe it.  This is my opinion of our fans and where they are at.

That could possibly be it, but we don't know either way for sure.

But yeah booing a player to his face from his own fan at an event that is supposed to be fun is terrible, but not surprising.

how ignorant, sal should be cheered for what he's done, putting aside his last year of ice time for the betterment of the team and youth. that has to be really rough for him.. but why does this surprise or bother anyone, for us folks who have been driving cars for over 25 years, the degradation of common courtesy is nothing new

No other way to put it...that just sucks on every level.  I definitely didn't like Sal the player the last couple of seasons, but everything I've seen of Sal the person screams down-to-earth class act and generally good guy.  And an event like last night's isn't a game, where booing is somewhat tolerable (I don't do it myself...not to my team's players, anyway).  I'm guessing Sal took the high road and let the booing roll off him, but damn...yeah, some fans really just suck royally.

this is another reason why putting the C on him was a mistake from the start... he was already declining, fans were not thrilled about him at all, he's not "on par" lets say with other captains in the league, he couldnt "lead" on the ice or really have an impact.

I mean i get that a big block shot or a hit or the way he handles himself are all good things etc etc

But putting the C on a guy like that is only gonna expose him even more and the backlash from the fans is inevitable.

We have a hard enough time being a destination for players that actually want to be. We don't need dumb dick fans like this. I guess these people booing aren't old enough to realize how close we were to actually being in Nashville. I don't want to go through that again.

Well, your last sentence is probably true -- fans are naturally going to scrutinize the Captain of their team, no matter what. But the truth is, we don't really have any way to know how effective a leader Sal or anyone else is. Only the people in that locker room know. I'm sure there is some level of consideration given to the public relations impact of which player is wearing the C, but in the end the Captaincy is about leadership in the room, not whether you or I like the guy or not.

I don't really read much (or trust much of what I do read) about the behind-the-scenes, inner workings of the team, and I will concede that many of you know more about it than I do. And I will further concede that, like most of you, I don't have any desire to see Sal back in the lineup. He's just not that good any more. But all that said, I have never read about or heard any player speaking of Sal with anything other than the utmost respect, and only they can know whether or not he deserves the C or not. Our feelings about him are irrelevant.

And of course, it goes without saying, booing any player during a fan meet & greet event is entirely inappropriate and despicable. Totally off the map.

This thread just had to be bumped didn't it? I have no problem with someone criticizing the fans of one's own team but when someone lives to only insult his fellow fans and goes around digging for reasons to hate on the fans, then I have a problem. That is the case here.

Forum hall monitor strikes again with a not so subtle jab at me. Of course you are basically saying that you would have no issues with this but because I bumped it then it's invalid.

You live to tell myself and other posters on here what they can and cannot post. So how about I take a page out of your own book and tell you to just stop already.

That's awful, these guys are humans, people seem to forget that. The Devils don't HAVE to throw events like this, I feel awful that something like that would happen, people need to get a grip.

Short of a player saying "Jersey sucks and their fans suck", there's no reason to boo a player to their face when they're going out of their way for an event like this (or signing autographs in the parking lot as well). Awful awful awful.

What would you possibly be booing Salvador for? For not being a superstar captain? He's been injured for 30 games or so, and the team hasn't gotten a lick better. His replacements have been Hegelson and Fraser for fvck sake. Really, to boo the captain to his face in a meet and greet is so disgusting. How horrible of a human being do you have to be to do that to a really good person.

His career might be over. Deboer said in an interview after he got fired that he didn't think Salvador was coming back this year. What the fvck would the point be?

eh, this seems the appropriate place to bring that up....and something like that is discussion worthy.....beats 300 threads about the same thing too :P

Terrible if true. I've been really upset at how Salvador was being utilized late last year and earlier this year under Deboer but I would not boo the guy at an off ice fan event. Heck I never even booed him even when he played poorly on the ice because he generally gave his effort and visibly so. He deserves better and if this was a STH event it makes it even worse.

This is certainly true, I just take it with a grain of salt based on who its coming from. I imagine the vast majority of fans at the event were classy and respectful and of course the poster hates that narrative.

EDIT: I mean it's complete stupidity. What is his point? That our fans suck? That the Devils have a few rotten eggs for fans? What team doesn't? It seems wrong to malign the people at an event like this, especially when you have no intention of portraying them fairly.

If you don't like the topic, don't post.  That simple.

You don't have to be the pathetic hall monitor that you are in every topic.

The hatred of DeBoer and the players is missed directed and should never happened. This hatred needs to be directed to the responsible parties, the owners for the product they put on the ice and the prices they charge to see this product in person . It's as simple as that. No single player or group of players currently with the NJ DEVILS could be the problem considering who is the coach, that has been proven as of late. Injuries and sickness isn't the issue because it has been proven that the results are the same with different coaches with and without health players. So the issue is clearly with the owners. They are more interested in gouging the present STHS and the casual fan with their experience at the Rock than providing a competitive product on the ice.

If you continue to go to games and buy season tickets and individual tickets for the NJ Devils, along with buying the Devils merchandise then stop, let me repeat, stop complaining you deserve what you get.
