Federal Mediation Fails

Assistance from federal mediators proved unable to break the deadlock in negotiations between the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association.

Talks broke off again today after two days of meetings in a Woodbridge office building that were overseen by the mediators. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service had assigned Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh and Director of Mediation Services John Sweeney to the proceedings.

There are no further talks with the mediators scheduled at this time.

“After spending several hours with both sides over two days, the presiding mediators concluded that the parties remained far apart, and that no progress toward a resolution could be made through further mediation at this point in time,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. “We are disappointed that the mediation process was not successful.”

Today is Day 75 if the owners lockout.
