Brodeur embarrassed himself and the franchise today

reading and listening to his post game comments makes it seem like to a large degree he still doesn't get it. ESPN article makes it seem like he absolutely wanted out of the game after two.

Anybody have a screen cap of him sitting in the bench in the third? Hopefully the turning point with the rotation.

He never has, you know that already though. I believe it was you who flipped out back in 2012 playoffs after one of the Panthers games where he played a puck to Volch terribly wrong and said "I played it exactly where I wanted to"

Not once in his career has he ever blamed himself or took responsibility in an interview like that, it's my biggest Brodeurian pet peeve.

Yes and on the other hand we have Cory openly blaming and putting a loss on him while it really wasnt...

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault also noted the poor condition of the ice. The rink was positioned horizontally stretching from the third base foul line to the first base foul line. The end near the third base foul line was the portion that was problematic during the pregame inspection.

"The only thing that I found surprising was the quality of the ice," Vigneault said. "You'd think that a day like this where it's below zero Celsius, so below 32 Fahrenheit, that you're talking about ideal conditions. You should be able to get ice and they had issues with the ice. I was surprised about that."

Devils forward  Patrik Elias called the ice's quality "questionable."

"The conditions were what they were. Obviously it was tough, it was snowing," Elias said. "The quality of the ice was questionable. But you know that's going to happen going in but it's the same thing for both teams." .

Others commented about ice conditions however people are just focused on Marty's comments.  When do we start getting on Eilas' case?  How about the Ranger's coach?  Think they were copping out???   It's obvious most here think believe that Marty was copping out.

As much as Marty may or may not have let down the franchise, I thought Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were more embarrassing to the state of New Jersey -- with two band members wearing Rangers jerseys and none of them wearing any Devils gear, not even so much as a Devils hat or scarf. WTF was up with that? LOL.

Wasn't the whole reason they were invited to perform at the game because they are a "Jersey" band? If the organizers wanted a New York music act, I'm sure they could've come up with a band light years better than them.

Yeah, I'm still bitter about that. I'm going to go take it out on this dead horse ... :horse:

Who here thinks that when Schneider let in the penalty shot, Marty was on the bench thinking, "I would have had that!"?

He probably thinks that and he should - great athletes are always optimistic about their abilities, it's part of why they become greats. Doesn't mean that Brodeur's isnt one of the worst goalies in the league at this point.

They suck anyway.  Even more so now.

I think it's so funny how people think this is the moment where Marty's career ends. Sure, the game was on a national stage. It would have been great to win, but it's just another regular season loss. A bad one, but just a loss.

I seriously doubt the team is viewing the game the same way some fans are. I am confident in their eyes, there was no turning of a corner or changing of the guard.

That being said, as a fan, you have to kind of hope against hope that he hangs up his skates at the end of the season.

It was a joke. But thanks. I support Marty.

The end of his career, no.  He still has games left to this season, and he will get some starts.  Cory can't start all remaining 29 games.

The end of him being the go-to guy, yes.  It has to be.  There's no excuses anymore.  It was one thing when Hedberg was clearly finished last season, and there simply wasn't a better option.  Now there is, and it's not even close.  Cory is putting up numbers that rank with the NHL's best this season.

To me, it's really simple, what happens after this season.  Lou and Marty are friends, and hopefully, both of them can see that Marty does not have it anymore, and Marty exits the game as gracefully as he can, for a guy who looks like he held on too long (even if he had some nice moments along the way in the last two seasons).  If Marty thinks he can still play, Lou's got to tell him no.  What's sad is I don't think Marty finds someone else to sign him this time, if he insists on going that route.  Last time he signed a contract, he came off a 50-game stretch of .920 save% play.  Last season, he was at .901, and this season he'll be about the same.  His save% since 11/27 is .881, so it's not like he's going to end the season on a flourish.  The other guy is doing just fine with the same players in front of him, so it's not like anyone can rightly say "Well, he's playing on a terrible team."  And even if PDB somehow thinks that save%s don't matter, there is no disputing the fact that .900ish season save%s rank very low in today's NHL.  He'll be 42 years old by the start of next season.  Why would anyone sign him?  I think everyone can see what we are.  What sucks about this is I can see Marty having to be forced to retire not because he wanted to, but because no one was interested, which is pretty embarrassing for a guy of his stature.  So yeah, I hope he leaves on his own, instead of people having to make the decision for him.

To be quite honest, I didn't like the outside game.  I didn't like how it looked on TV, I didn't like the quality of play that it produced due to sh!t ice.  And the fact that 20 degree weather is a lot harder on a 41 year old goalie that doesn't have the luxury of a heated bench as the players do.  He looked slow and I think the cold played a large part of that.  The cold affects a 41 year old more than a 30 year old.

Regardless, he played poor.  But the defense was awful as well.  Too many odd man rushes.

But with how sloppy the play was with the quality of the ice and lighting, I am probably the only one but I would be glad to never get another outside game.

I have always said that the ego and attitude that brought Marty all his success for 90% of his career would lead to a painful end on the last 10%.Seems to be the case.

However I am not going to rip on the guy and throw him under the bus.

If you think last night was painful for us as fans imagine how he feels.

He has dedicated his life to the sport of hockey and the New Jersey Devils, and like many sportsmen who have been at the top for a long time, he is probably dreading the void that wil be left afterwards.

I lay more of the blame at Lou and Pete’s feet right now , because they need to be helping him come to terms with the fact that all things in sport come to an end no matter how good you once were. Last night was hopefully the wakeup that everyone involved with the team needed that we should be thanking Marty for what he has done, and moving him graciously towards retirement.

I dread to think what Jagr will be like at the end, I can easily see the guy playing till he is 55 somewhere in the Czech republic.

Brodeur certainly had a game to forget but I felt like the team embarrassed themselves as a whole. I can't put this all on Brodeur. Careless turnovers and bad positioning and they left Brodeur out to dry. I lost count of how many odd man rushes the Rangers had and they seemed to convert on almost every single one. My problem today is definitely with the team in the last 40 minutes and not Brodeur. Today was really a perfect storm of everything that could go wrong, going wrong.

Hit it right on the head, 2 3 on 1s & a 2 on 1, which all seemed to go inthe net.

the "D" was awful, I've made it a point to watch Gelinas closely, wow is he poor defensively, Merril & Larsen need back in the line up, no way Gelinas should play over either of them...

Gelinas is a game changer on offense, he requires special attention, we need him. Sal should sit for Larson though.

Damn auto correct made gelinas into Belinda

yup, they need to pair larsson and merril behind greene and fayne now,  those should set us up for years, divide the 3rd pairing scraps up between whom ever they like, keep Atrains contract as a PK specialist if they cant eat it

news flash for anyone who thinks marty is getting a number one gig anywhere including the devils, "aint happening"  and he's probably a bad choice for a back up

'7' has been spewing sh!t about Brodeur for 6+ years that I can remember but the reality is Brodeur has been a below average goalie for 3.5 of the last 4 seasons.

If I can defend 7 for one moment.. the anger\backlash from fans is NOT because of the past or present.. it's due to the future! The uncertainty about whether or not this season's his last.. and fans are getting fed-up being pigeon held by a 42 year-old, who's only point in continuing to play seems to be an effort to further inflate his stats, to the point where (he feels) they're unattainable. It's bad enough to put DeBoer, Schneider, and the fans through this goaltending fiasco for ONE season. But to do it again next year?? --that's selfish. You want to continue your career?? --fine! But do it on somebody else's team.. not mine! (yeah, I just said that) We're fighting for a fvcking playoff spot god damn it.. and 100 years of conventional hockey says you; "stay with the hot goalie". You ride the guy who's white-hot.. and I had to see a goalie, who's been playing amazing with a Sv% near .930, ride the pine yesterday because this organization needed to feed the ego of ONE PERSON. A cold goalie who hadn't played in a week, playing a game in an environment less suitable for a player in his 40's, vs a player in his 20's.

The Devils as an organization used to be untouchable.. not anymore. They preached team, they preached selflessness. They preached; "no ONE PLAYER is bigger than the franchise" for 30 years! --and all that went south yesterday, in an effort to turn a professional hockey team, into the Harlem Globetrotters.

*EDIT: What happens if Marty doesn't hit 700 even after next season? Does he come back again for 2016?? Is that how he'd want to be remembered.. as some compiler?? Because 700 wins off a career of 1991 - 2016, would be the definition of a compiler folks. --and if that's the endgame in Brodeur's head.. then have fun a blast ruining your career like Brett Favre!

Marty was not good, no doubts about that but our defense and pathetic captain were just as much to blame

This is not just about yesterday bro..

Brodeur:  28 GP,  2.52 GAA, .899 Sv% (ranked 40th in the NHL) --41 years old.

Schneider: 26 GP, 1.86 GAA, .927 Sv% (ranked 5th in the NHL) --27 years old.

..if it looks like I'm trying to make this seem overall simplistic, it's because it really is! Marty has been a .500 goalie (at best) since 2010. Over his last 250 games, he's manufactured 125 wins, since 2009. He can play the remaining back-to-backs, but THAT'S IT! I want to see this team ride Cory the rest of the way.

The thing that pissed me off the most about Marty was that it seemed that he and DeBoer had to make a joint decision to "let" Schneider play the third period. They act like they had to pull Whitey Ford off the mount in the 8th inning of a no hitter. I am sick of the Brodeur nostalgia. It is actually costing the team points at this juncture. After the fourth goal PDB should have said you know what Marty you don't have it today. Schneids get in there. Marty has more starts this season compared to Schneider and that better change. Corey down the stretch.

I think it's a vicious cycle for Marty from here on out..

He needs lots of consecutive starts to get on a roll and find his game, but he won't get them anymore.  And he shouldn't, with the way Cory's played.

So..it's all downhill from here, imo.

The only way Brodeur plays in the NHL next year is in a Devils jersey. No NHL team in their right mind will sign him. Nobody has to worry about him in a Habs or any other teams jersey because they all have starters and backups and guys stashed in the AHL better than Brodeur. If Marty wants to come back it's up to Lou to tell him the truth...that is if he has the guts to do so (to this point, I'm not sure he does)

If Brodeur is really that dead set on playing I'm sure a KHL or Euro league owner will be happy to give him millions and he can go play out the string there.

What Brodeur needs is to be humble and accepting. He's not a stupid guy. He needs to know that this year was the year to cede the spotlight to Cory from day one. To be the mentor to him that Terreri was to YOU

Did Terreri bitch and moan when you took his job? Did Terreri whine and cry after he saved our asses in Boston (and get this...won a playoff game in OT...something Brodeur rarely does) and then was back on the bench in favor of Brodeur?

The same is being expected of Brodeur and he is not delivering

He's not going to hit 700 wins this year, and I hope to GOD he doesn't try and do it here next year.

Let him sign in Montreal next year as a backup.  It'll suck for us to see him play somewhere else, but he can't be here next year.

1. Carey Price

2. Peter Budaj

3. Zachary Fucale

all better than Martin Brodeur is right now. They want nothing to do with him
