USAkid90
Why wait till July 1st and potentially lose him? SIGN HIM NOW! We do that we have Parise and Kovy for the next 10-15 years As good as Martin is IMO Parise and Kovy are priority.

ThreeCups
I pray Lou does EVERYTHING in his power to get a deal done ASAP, and not wait until July 1 when there will undoubtedly be a high priced bidding war involving the usual suspects. (Rag$ anyone?) I do not think Lou would have made this deal if he did not truly believe Ilya would be here for the long haul. Get er done Lou! Devils Pride 26
Parise (3.125) - Zajac (3.88) - Langs (2.8) Elias (6) - Zubrus (3.4) - Kovalchuk (8) Rolston (5) - Cormier (.875) - Clarkson (2.5) Zharkov (.850) - Pelley (.550) - Halischuk (.875) Davis (.550) Martin (5) - White (3) Salvador (2.9) - Greene (.738) Eckford (.984) - Corrente (.821) Fraser (.550) Brodeur (5.2) backup (.550) -------------- $58.148M It's possible, not very probable. Martin should be around 5, pando would have to get sent to lowell, salvador could be moved, rolston might be able to be traded, if he finishes strong and puts up decent numbers. Even for this year its still worth the risk. If he doesn't resign, we have 8M to sure up our team. 4M top 4 D/4M 2nd line center.

Eltab213
Its possible if one of Rolston or Zubs is traded, which isnt too far outside the realm of possibilty. Yes I realize Rolston has a NTC, but how players with NTCs actually waive it. I can only think of one in the past five years, Heatley? Eltab213
Im pretty sure Kotalik didnt waive his NTC since hes now a Calgary Flame
sundstrom
it'll be a tough squeeze for kovalchuk w/ martin too if they don't dump rolston which is mandatory. rolston's NTC and cap number make it a virtual impossibility. also - you leave no breathing room for parise' raise. kovy could get $8MM and Parise could get $6.5MM over long year deals but there's no chance with rolston on the roster. obviously pando's $2MM is long gone too. There's enough room for Parise's raise, at least by the time he's an unrestricted free agent, when White and Langs come off the books. Devils731
How about the Devils just deal his rights once the season is over for the ever elusive conditional draft pick?

Devils731
I'll opt for the long term contract extension. Either way it has to wait since I don't think the team can realistically sign Kovalchuk without dealing Rolston first. If the team can't deal Rolston then trading Kovalchuk's rights makes sense since those deals can return something decent, especially if the player signs with that team, for effectively nothing on the Devils end. It would just be something to basically add onto the Devils side of the ledger for this deal.

Devs3cups
Parise is RFA at the ned of his contract so i'm sure we'll have no problem to re-sign him! And it's realy possible to sing Kovy. Probably one of LOU'S greateast moves ever.
skullsmasher
Ok lets try to get into the mind of a genius for a second here. There are only two logical reasons why Lou would do this. 1. He thinks we have the potential to go to the cup and just need a star forward to get us all the way, so hes a rental for this year. 2. All of the above except he wants to sign him as a franchise player. Lou has commented before about the importance of a community. He shook up the A line back in the day because we relied too much on 3 guys. Signing Kovalchuk in the first place would indicate use as a rental, but signing him long term is extremely out of character for Lou. My point is we should not get our hopes up too much. Seeing Kovalchuk signed long term would be extremely surprising to me. All I'm saying is don't be too disappointed at the cup parade if Kovalchuk decides to sign elsewhere. Revan
1. Disregard Rolston. 2. Acquire picks. 3. Re-sign Kovy! After the season, I mean. Giving up Rolston for nothing before the playoffs would be foolish. Edited February 5, 2010 by Revan
gtmet
Ilya already rejected 12 years 100+ million. The only way to lock him up before free agency is to offer him a max contract 11 mil a season for 8-10 years. There is no benefit to trying to lock him up now, just hope that he has a good experience and you can get a slight (notice I said slight) discount in the bidding war, or at least last match rights in the bidding. 1. Disregard Rolston. 2. Acquire picks. 3. Re-sign Kovy! After the season, I mean. Giving up Rolston for nothing before the playoffs would be foolish. Rock
I not going to fret about Kovalchuk re-uping. I feel he's going in July anyways. Just going to sit back and enjoy the (hopefully long)ride. Edited February 5, 2010 by Rock
