Devils have $2,231,467 remaining in cap space

Right now our cap is at $2.3 million. If we trade VV who makes $1.8 then we are at $4.1 million. We can also move a player like Andy Greene and say about another 500K. So maybe we can keep GIO and go out and get a young D-guy making around $2.5 a year? We would still have $1.5 million in cap. We can also dump Mike Rupp(500K) because we have Vrana and Pelley that can play in his place.

IMO, the HOLIK signing makes Mike Rupp expendable. I would rather see either Pelley or Vrana in his place. Give the kids a shot.

Why would we trade our most physical defensemen? I say keep VV, personally.

Now that Lou's catching his breath after a big first day, I think Stage 2 of whatever he has planned is going to take some time to evolve. There are guys on this roster on July 3 that aren't going to be here come October, but I think Lou's going to take his time (as are some other GMs) from here on out...we might not see another significant move for several days or even weeks.

VV just isn't that great at positioning. He is at best the 5th best defenseman on the team and he may be as low as 7th. So losing a 3rd pairing, at best, defenseman to free up cap space can be a good idea if there is a reason for doing so. If there isn't another move made after that fact though then there is no reason not to keep VV.

Rupp should be gone.. the 4th line should be Zubrus/Holik/Clarkson..

That opens up a spot on the 3 other lines for guys like Vrana and Bergfors..

Gio has to go and the only way to get rid of Vishnevski is to package him with Gionta.

I think that is a safe bet. I would think most GM's will not sit back and let the dust settle before they make any more moves. I wouldn't expect a lot of trades until around the start of the season.

We have White and Salvador who can play physical. VV is a liability out there. We all saw it last year. He is constantly out of position trying to make a big hit. When Andy Greene and Brookbank are playing over you there is a problem. He will be moved.

VV was signed last year to be one of our second pairing D-Guys, but he has been a bust. It is just a matter of time he gets moved. IMO

Why all this Bergfors and Vrana talk here? Neither player is ready to come up to the Devils and play everyday. Especially Bergfors. he did not do very well early last season so I just do not see either player on the roster this coming season. It would take a miracle to see one of these two players. If I was to choose it would be Vrana over Bergfors to maybe make the team.

They may not make the team, but I can see both players getting a nice long look...especially since they're cost-effective.

You mean Bergfors struggled in the 6 minutes early in the season he got to play before hurting his shoulder? I really don't know who you can say it's unlikely for either player to make the roster this season when Bergfors made the roster last season.

I am higher on Vrana than Bergfors.. but Bergfors was hurt all season. He made the club, got hurt, got healthy and was sent down to get his legs back, got hurt again and just didnt recover that well from it.

Vrana had an awesome year and should make the club, He is brylin with a more physical edge.

They will get a look CR like the rest of the young players but just do not see either one making the team just yet. Like I said maybe Vrana.

True. We have no idea if they are ready, but Bergfors did make the club last year and got hurt in his first game. If he made the club last year, he should make it this year. I don't think he has regressed just that his season was injury filled.

Vrana made big leaps last year in Lowell and I think he will def challenge for a spot. That is one of the main reasons why Brylin was let go. To open up a spot.

We shall see.

If that is what you call making the roster then fine. This is a different team now with the additions of Holik and Rolston and don't see Bergfors making the team. Good Luck to him and Vrana.

Agree about Vrana and maybe he might make the team. Bergfors seems to be the injury type of player and it will hurt his chances of making the team. He is starting to remind me of Foster as a player who always gets hurt.

Yes, Bergfors made the roster and if he didn't get hurt he probably wasn't going to be sent down before game 2. Or do you think the Devils had him on the roster just to play in the first game of the season then send him down? What else would be in the opening night lineup be called?

I just don't think he would have stayed that long on the Devils and he would have been sent down. Just my opinion. He was there for the first game of the season but even if he was healthy and didn't get hurt I think he would have been eventually sent down to Lowell. I hope he or Vrana make the team becuase you do have to mix the young youth with the older veteran players to have balance.

VV played way more games than either of those guys so I'm not sure how they were playing instead of VV.

At the end of the season and the playoffs VV was not an option for Sutter. Andy Greene played over VV at the start of the Ranger series. What does that tell you? VV came here to be a top 4 pairing D-guy, not a #6 or reserve D guy. We have plenty of reserve D guys for that role. We need a good pairing D-guy with Salvador and VV aint that guy.

Thank you so much. I completly agree everyone includes these rookies in their lineup setups they have to make the team first!!!

VV played in 3 games and was +3 for the playoffs

Greene played in 2 games and -1 for the playoffs

Brookbank played in 0 playoff games.

So the guy who played the most and performed the best in the playoffs was sitting behind the other 2?

I understand VV played games in the playoffs, but you missed my point. Greene was Sutter's First Choice to play against the Rags series. VV sat the first two games. VV then became an option when we went down 2 games to none.

For a guy who signed last summer, we all thought he was much more than the role he had last year. There was a reason why he was in Sutter's dog house.

I think Vishnevski is pretty good and I like Andy Greene.. but its not about liking a player..

Vishnevski would have decent trade value, The only problem with having him is he would be 3rd on our "At home" list. Also I don't think him and Oduya would be a bad pairing.

So why wasn't VV in his doghouse the other 69 games in the regular season he played? I get your point but Sutter always goes with the hot hand and I think it was pretty obvious the Devils would need offense in the Rangers series so he hoped Greene would actually do something since VV's role is not to provide offense. VV was obviously a more preferred choice than Brookbank and Greene last season, despite Greene playing over VV for 2 playoff games, that was a matchup play, not a preference for Greene.

I would do something like Gionta and Vishnevski out to Edmonton for Steve Staios and a draft pick. Oilers were supposedly major players in the Hossa sweepstakes so maybe they're willing to take on salary.

then we can go out and sign Markus Naslund.
