Toronto Maple Leafs right winger David Clarkson took a left fist from Buffalo Sabres center Cody McCormick to the face in a fight Friday night, and the aftermath kept him off the ice Saturday.

It gets worse. Clarkson's got a date with a doctor:

It's another unfortunate incident for Clarkson in a preseason game against the Sabres. He was suspended 10 regular-season games last year after leaving the Leafs' bench to protect the honor of Phil Kessel, who then-Sabre John Scott was bullying.

Clarkson's signed through 2019-20 at a cap hit of $5.25 million. He has a modified no-trade clause, and a full no-movement clause. If you're a Leafs fan, it's best to not think about his contract. Ever.

David Clarkson removed from preseason game for 'precautionary reasons' after goal, fight

David Clarkson's preseason got off to an eventful start Friday in Buffalo.

After a rather inauspicious debut season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the $5.25-million-a-year man appeared in his first exhibition game after being held out of the start of training camp due to a lower-body injury.

In 8:30 of ice time against the Sabres, Clarkson tipped in a Roman Polak point shot to give Toronto its fifth goal of the night, then engaged in fisticuffs with Cody McCormick early in the third period.

At that point, he was removed from the game.

The exact reason for Clarkson's removal was not immediately made known, but as per Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, his right eye was "swollen shut" after taking a couple hard and direct punches to the face from McCormick.

As such, the Maple Leafs certainly weren't going to take any chances with the health of their second-highest paid forward.

I'm sure will offer him a PTO at some point later in his career.

You can pretty much book it, yep.

And that sucks for Clarkson - but then again, he's getting paid big bucks and living in his hometown.

He'll definitely become the #1 enemy (if he hasn't already), but this is what he should've expected.
