Tom Gulliti of NorthJersey.com and Sovetsky Sport in Russia are confirming Tuesday’s report by Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter that New Jersey Devils prospect Alexander Vasyunov is headed back to the KHL to rejoin his former team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

According to the report Vasyunov contacted Lokomotiv and expressed the desire to return. The 23 year old Russian is set become a restricted free agent on July 1. However, should the Devils fail to extend Vasyunov a qualifying offer by 5 p.m. ET Monday he would become an unrestricted free agent. In order to retain Vasyunov’s right the Devils would have to tender a qualifying offer that would need to include a two-way deal with a 10 percent salary increase over the $685,000 he earned last season.

The Russian prospect showed some promise collecting 5 points (1g 4a) in the 18 NHL games he played in during the 2011-11 season. He especially looked comfortable when he was paired with Ilya Kovalchuk. Vasyunov has spent the last three season in Albany and it’s time for him to take the next step or the Devils should move on. He has a ton of offensive skill but doesn’t like to mix it up and plays a passive defensive game if he plays any defense at all. His small frame and lack of strength could be a problem for him against bigger stronger defenseman. At this stage of his development he has not shown enough offensive upside to give anybody the impression that he’ll be anything more than a role player for the Devils.
