maybe so, but it usually comes at the expense of skill, especially in the case of someone like konopka, who took a ton of penalties last year. ----konopka's a good player for a bad team, but a bad player for a good team.

people who watch a player night in and night out very often come to the wrong opinion about players. i know i do - i can't stand watching clarkson, and i couldn't stand watching rolston, and neither of these players were ever horrible.

fans don't like a big player who doesn't hit, but that's steckel's game. most of steckel's value is in his faceoff ability, which isn't something that you really see. the average center wins 5 faceoffs of 10. steckel wins 6 in 10.

Agreed. But Konopka brings more than Steckel - lets see what he gets for $$$

steckel has gotten more minutes on better teams and has put up better numbers. he takes way more penalties than steckel. he's not a better player than steckel. he will get less money.

People who watch a player night in and night out have a much better opinion of a player. You can't stand watching Clarkson because he can't skate and has very low hockey sense. Rolston's biggest attribute is his shot, and he can't hit the ocean from the pier. Of course they are horrible, and especially at the money they make. Hell, no one wanted Rolston at half his salary.

And of course physical play has value. Anyone who's played hockey can tell you that. You get pounded into the boards a few times, and it changes some of your decisions. There's no stat for that.

Rolston's biggest attribute is his shot, and he can't hit the ocean from the pier.

I think someone keeps track of shot percentage that actually hit the net and Rolston's isn't bad. If I'm remembering correctly then this is a good example of watching a player every day but ending up with a wrong impression. If I'm remembering incorrectly then ignore this all.

Haha, I wonder if thats true. Theres a lot I can't stand about Rolston. His shot is one. He also rarely fights for pucks and gives up on the play easily. Of course, I think it all gets amplified by the price tag.

Rolston's shot is nowhere near as bad (accuracy wise) as it was his first go-around.

My problem with him on the point is that he doesn't read the point well defensively and gets caught flat-footed.
When you team him with Kovy and they get into "hot potato one-timer" mode, this gets real evident. their spacing gets really bad and they don't read problems developing.

that was part of the reason I liked Zajac back there, he played the blue line alot better than either of them.

Damn. I was kinda figuring this as most of you were as well, but thats a damn shame just for him. Its hard to watch an injury such as a head issue ruin someones career in the sport they love. Best of luck to Salvador with whatever happens.
