Carbonneau behind the bench?
According to New Jersey Devils‘ beat writer Tom Gulitti, Guy Carbonneau announced earlier this week that he’s not returning to the QMJHL next season to coach Chicoutimi. Leading many to speculate that he could possibly be filling the vacant New Jersey coaching position.
Recently Devils GM Lou Lamoriello made mention that the team is very close to naming a new bench boss. The usually cryptic Lamoriello has been more vocal lately only fueling the fire that New Jersey is close to filling the spot.
This would be Carbonneau’s second head coaching job. He led the Canadiens for nearly three season with a 124-83-23 career record which including a Jack Adams nomination in 2007-08. If Carbonneau is indeed the man the Devils hire he will be under a large microscope because of last season disaster with first time head coach John Maclean. Carbonneau would follow a long line of fellow Montreal Canadiens to lead the Devils including Jacques Lemaire, Larry Robinson, Claude Julien and Pat Burns. Three of the four led the Devils to Stanley cup Championships.
While others may not agree I like the idea of a guy like Carbonneau behind the bench. He has a championship pedigree (won 3 Cups as a player) and he’s proven he can win in as a NHL head coach. I also like the fact that Lamoriello is going back to the Montreal connection. It’s a formula that has been extremely successful for him and the organization. But I may be getting ahead of myself. s of now no coach has been named. Other names are still flying around out there like Ken Hitchcock for one, it should make for an interesting week for the Devils and their fans. Also, fans should forget last season and give the next head coach, whether it’s Carbonneau or not, a chance to be successful.
Let the speculation begin!
