Forward Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Andy Greene will miss the Devils’ game tonight against the Winnipeg Jets because of injuries.
Kovalchuk pulled a leg muscle late in the Devils’ 4-3 shootout win in Philadelphia on Thursday. Greene had been trying to play through a lower-body injury before sitting out Thursday’s game.
Kovalchuk tried skating during the morning skate today, but left about halfway through and still had a noticeable limp in the locker room afterward.
“I think it’s a little too early so I don’t want to push it and get it worse,” Kovalchuk said.
Goaltender Johan Hedberg said his back is “100 percent” after getting treatment on it Friday and he had no problems with it during the morning skate. He will dress as Martin Brodeur’s backup tonight.
Devils coach Pete DeBoer said left wing Eric Boulton still is not ready to return from his sore right hand.
With Kovalchuk out, Rod Pelley will get in the lineup after being a healthy scratch the last four games. Pelley will play left wing on the fourth line with Brad Mills and Cam Janssen.
Clarkson will move up to take Kovys place and Fraser will get the spot of Greene.
