So, I see a few blogs and the NBC Sports website throwing around some ideas on numbers for a theoretical contract offer to Parise.
If you were a GM (assumed to be the Devil's GM, of course), what would you offer (on average. We'll just count the cap hit here)?
How much would be too much?

I think that I'd go up to 7.5 mil for 15 years, with a target of $6 mil/10 years.

I've seen as high as $8.5 mil thrown around (nobody seems to mention years...), which seems a bit high to me. Personally, I'll be at least a little upset to see him go at any price, but if he signs a contract above $7.5 per then I think that I'd say "more power to ya" to the team that got him.

I'm inclined to agree with you that a hit of anything above $7.5 mill is too much and that I'd really prefer that it was a hit of between 6.5 and 7.5.

Tough call, because do we really want 40 year old Zach and Kovy each with a hit ranging from 6.66 to 7.5 per year? Who even knows what the league and cap will look like in 10 to 12 years, but that money gets worse as they age (assuming their play slips with age)

i wish Zach really really wants to stay here and that they can REALLY work out a deal... by that i mean i good deal for both sides... if you want a cup, don't handcuff the team with a huge cap hit and let the team afford other players to help you, Carter and Richards did it in Philly (they got fvcked but wtv), Detroit is doing it... i'd really like Zach to land a similar cap than Kovy, Maybe 7m

also personally do you really really want to get the highest possible contract? Zach saw guys like Rolston for example... who we're playing "alright" but was getting ripped by the fans and everyone cause you dont produce for your cap hit... which i dont know... i'd aim a bit lower but then if you have a bad season you dont feel as bad about yourself

I hear you, and I generally agree. So does Lou, obviously.
Still, you've gotta play within the "rules" as they are currently defined when it comes to cap management. Sucks, but that's the way it is (right now). I imagine that this stuff will all change rather drastically after the upcoming strike/lockout this summer, but nobody knows for sure what the new parameters will look like. I know that as Parise/Arnott (his agent) I certainly wouldn't be willing to play the "let's accept a short deal and wait and see what happens", not only because I'd bet that the scene will look worse for the players but also because you never know if (you or) your guy will be healthy after another year.

After all, that's what's most likely to change in the new CBA (restricting the length of deals, that is), and the single season cap hits all seem to be falling within a set range ($6 to $8 mil per, on average).

I'm not sure what length Parise is hoping for, but I imagine he's gonna want at least 6 years. That way he has some security, so he can build a house, etc. I doubt we see him get a 15 year deal like Kovy has after what happened with that ordeal. Parise is a smaller guy and I don't imagine we'll see him playing much after age 36-38, so I'd imagine a deal for 8-10-12 years is what will probably happen. For me, I'd prefer a 8 year deal, but I wouldn't be too worried about being handcuffed if it's a 10 year deal, but 12 would be a bit too long for my liking after seeing other teams have cap issues due to having a couple players with huge money, long term deals.

I'm hoping he'll sign for 8 years at $52-56 million or if it's a 10 year deal, at like $65 million or so. I think if we're talking a 8-10 year deal, giving him anything over $7.0-7.5 million cap hit is going to be too much and will hurt the team.

I'd say 1m per year more then the Kovy deal but if his trade value is high enough I'd explore that option first.

I think you are saying they helped Philly, but I never got how some say Carter (11 yrs / 5.3mm hit)/Richards (12 yrs / 5.75mm) were bad contracts. They are both signed reasonably to long term deals.

We are basically hoping Kovy blossoms into Elias-like at the back end of his contract. If he doesn't, we are in some trouble. How will Parise fair at 35-40 - can he be a fulltime 3rd line checker as he ages? If we have any hope in keeping him at a sub 7 cap hit, it's going to be on the mega deal. If we want him for 6-8 years, he's going to want 7.5mm cap hit or higher.

I think I'd bite the bullet at 8.5mm on a 6-8 deal... but I wouldn't be happy. 7/7.5mm is where I'd like to see him, but I think there would be a lot of takers at that price.

It's also important to keep inflation in mind... 6mm in 2005 is worth nearly 7mm today (http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/). So the cap has upward pressure from inflation alone... and you have to hope the economy is better 5+ years from now. Or else, really, we have more pressing concerns than hockey payrolls.
