Has Ilya Kovalchuk Changed For The Better?

I think via the eye test, Kovalchuk has improved and we're going to see some of his shots and some of his linemates' shots go in, but the numbers aren't quite there yet. Still, I don't see how he's going to be that effective going forward with a 10% shooting percentage - that has got to improve.

I love Kovy's attitude and heart, and he's a huge part of our team now. When he picks the puck up in center ice and turns on the afterburners, it must terrify defenses. And despite being asked to play on his non-natural wing, I think he makes a great first line with Zach and Henrique.
Two things I'd like him to change? 1 - on the PP - don't go all static on us and try to wind up for the big slapshot. I would ask him to mix it up much more, going low onto the goal-line, getting into the middle of the box and so on. In fact, some of his best moments on PP have been when he swapped sides with Foster to draw the play out. So get unpredictable please.
And 2 - chase back hard and clear out the slot. He's guilty of cruising back on occasion, and not picking up either the lead threat or the trailer.
These are not big things to fix though, and would make a big impact.

He hasn't learned how to give and go yet. Other than that, I think he's improving his overall game. He just has to spit it out once in a while while on the move.
Have you seen him and Elias on the PP?

The one against the Panthers is my personal favorite

“I think winning against them in the big stage, not just for me, but for the fans of New Jersey, people that are supporting us and always take a second seat to these guys for whatever reason, now they’ve got to be pretty happy going to work and going to school and doing all their things that they do." - Martin Brodeur

Oh gotchaThanks, Tri. I mean on a regular basis. I think the question was what did we think, not what Zubie 8 thinks of what we think. Sorry Zub. I was just hanging there.
Whenever I think of the give n go I think of scoring chances around the oppositions net. I understand what your saying now. Zajac was great with Kovy last year, he entered the zone and waited for the trailing Kovalchuk and Kovy could just pick his spots.

He's never going to be one of the top defensive forwards in the NHL, but we don't need him to be. As long as he backchecks and plays a solid defensive zone game (which he has generally done this season), he should be ok.
Yep exactly. Just clear out the slot though (min requirement for every forward). A full back check is the next level (Zach style), but that may detract from what we want him to do.

It's fair to have high expectations for a player of his caliber (and paycheck).. But I don't understand all the hate he's been getting from this board. The MacLean ordeal aside, he's still a point pr game player with a lot of heart. He was a beast the second half of last season and his been a beast this season. By far our best offensive player. Anyone actually watching the games instead of spreadsheets can see this.
That said; We got some wonderful samples of his "old Atlanta-style one-timers" today, hopefully it's gonna be a new trend!

Since January till today (including the hat trick
30 GP - 17 G - 20A - 37 PTS - (+4)
= 82 GP - 46G - 55A - 101 PTS - +11
If Parise comes back next season, the defensive minded offensive Kovy can prolly reach his pinnacle.

This comment is problematic not so much for being wrong or right but for the simple need to under appreciate just for the sake of sounding being esoteric.

[Mark Messier]: A big, bald attention whore with a stupid Easter Island-lookin face. - from who else? DaneykoIsGod!
Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime? - Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.
Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.
It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

I think that's a healthy attitude too. He knows he needs to be better, but isn't beating himself up over it (adding more pressure)...and I loved the on-ice interview where he commented on his one-timers, "I USED TO be able to do that"
His goals will come.

One big difference from last year to this is that he's getting his shots. He had 245 in 81 games last season...in his 62 GP this season he's already at 251 and counting. He'd have 36 goals this season if he was shooting at his career 14.3%.
Agreed - some of that is ice time related, some of it is him just playing better. I don't think we can expect 14.3% anymore, although Kovalchuk is weird in that he typically shoots better at even strength - I think back then he was flying the zone a lot more.
