It will take 2,314 signatures to give Newark residents something they are entitled to -- a say in whether the city spends $210 million on a downtown arena for the New Jersey Devils hockey team.

I'd rather see $210 million spent on renovating the city of newark then putting an arena in Newark.

Then where will they get the money to pay for the arena? Your pocket?

Putting an arena in Newark will rennovate and revitalize much of its downtown area. There are few things that consistently bring a lot of people to an area during non-work hours than an arena/stadium.

What's on the property that the Arena will be on now? Just consider it renovating that land.

Well it's not just Newark opposing sports complexes. Anyone else see the tv ad asking people to oppose the Jets Stadium in NYC? According to the ad, it will cost $600 mil to build it and they want that money to be put towards schools, clinics and to reopen fire stations.
My worst nightmare is we lose the Devils and keep the stinkin' Jets.

are you for real? Sometimes I think u arent a devils fan at all... you get to go to games for free, u love the team but u clearly dont want them staying in NJ...
UGh - im not gonna have this dispute again tho.
Newark is slowly rebuilding itself.. the NJPAC made a very nice little area.. this arena will do the same. And slowly other things will build themselves up, nbut keeping the devils in NJ is my concern and so 210 for the arena is a grand idea to me!@!!!!

That statement makes no sense. Putting an arena in Newark IS renovating the City of Newark.

If this goes to a vote, it will get shot-down. I know the voters in Allegheny County voted down a new arena for the Penguins. Didn't they do the same for the Steelers and Pirates who DID get new buildings?
The voters in Cleveland voted down a new stadium for the Browns in the mid-90's, a stadium EVENTUALLY was built after they lost their team.

IMO, an arena in Newark is good for the city's rebuilding and revitalization. Once that happens the rest should fall into place. Way different story for the Jets Stadium. NYC doesn't need a stadium, it doesn't need to attract business so I don't know how they can justify it being built. What the city does need is millions dumped into its horrible, dilapidated, overcrowded, underfunded schools. You can't be the greatest city until you can properly educate your children.

I've been gone for about a week now, but I feel I should weigh in on this. Since I'm a very visual person, I'll bring in a new map I made. It is of the Downtown Newark area with blue outlines on already completed projects and institutions, red on the proposed projects and fuschia on the areas that in my opinion are in need of development:
As you can see the Arena district takes up a large portion of the center of downtown and redevelops it. The Waterfront Project is already mostly underway. The Broad Street Transit Village is still just a proposal and the Mulberry Street Redevelopment Plan is for the moment the Council's political football. The large area in need of development just to the left of Military Park was at one point a proposed major development by the New Newark Foundation which took 4 years to go nowhere on developing it and eventually went bankrupt due to internal mismanagement and corruption.
In short, the arena is a very important and necessary piece to completing the puzzle that is downtown Newark.
