NCAA
Wisconsin lost to Penn State 3-2 (OT)
Joe Faust D: E, 2 PIM (Interference), 1 Shot
Season: 32 GP 1-0-1 +1 14 PIM 4.16 SH% 0.75 SH/GP
Watched this game and went into it not expecting much from Faust and that's what I saw. He's a junior and still hasn't worked his way off the 3rd pair nor does he recieve any special teams time and I don't recall seeing him in OT. Faust didn't seem very mobile, especially laterally, and often seemed as if he was a step behind the play. There were also a few instances where he got overpowered by an opposing forward along the boards in a puck battle. When he had time and space he made the right read or pass but that is to be expected for a 3rd year defensemen at that level. 2 bad plays that stand out:
1. 1st Period: Got caught staring at the puck just inside his blue line on the wing and nearly forgot about his man coming into the zone and driving the net. Faust panicked and tied the player up thus taking a penalty. Wisconsin was able to kill off the PP.
2. 3rd Period: Right after Faust is on for a Wisconsin goal that he didn't contribute to, he turns the puck over at his blue line off the ensuing faceoff from center ice and Penn State gets a quick goal. Faust got completely owned on the play and Penn State went own to get the next two goals for the victory.
He has another season to play at Wisconsin but I can't imagine him getting a contract from the Devils with the defensive depth they have and his performance.

Well, they can't all be gems. Thanks for the write-up. Good thing we have lots of depth with our defensive prospects.

I wish we'd have more on the offense... Were reaaaaally thin in term of forwards

even there we're still better than a couple years ago. JJ could be another Dave Bolland (potentially), Reid Boucher's got potential and Matteau who knows so there's *something* there that's better than what we had even if it's not exactly Sid/Malkin. At least we're not taking guys like Adrian Foster who never see the light of day

It's certainly much better than it was before the season started. Matteau looks like a keeper - he's got the size, speed, and smarts to be an NHL forward - DeBoer's comparing him with guys like Hartnell and Malone, and while he might not get there, there's still lots to look forward to from him. Loktionov's addition is huge - take a 5th round pick and turn it into a possible 50 point center? Sure. If he could learn how to play the wing that'd make things even better. And Reid Boucher had a pretty awful year last year but he's been dominant this year.
It's getting rarer these days to have great forward prospects sitting outside the NHL, so I think the distinction between prospect and player is less meaningful than it used to be - the Devils also have Josefson and Henrique as players under 25 who will make an impact. With them and people like Black and Pietila who can fill out the lower lines, I think they'll be okay for the next few years.

yeah it's better but there's a bunch of teams around us that i know have really good players coming their way. Our pool prospect on offence is really not deep compared to other plus we're losing Elias and Zubrus in a few years.
we have ONE natural right winger, Sislo. Then we have a bunch of guys who could be 3rd and 4th liners, Boucher and Matteau could be top 6 forwards.
Just on top of my head teams that im looking at more often cause i know fans of those teams, the wild have guys like coyles, philips, larsson, dumba, brodin, zucker, bulmer to look at. Habs have guys like Hudon, Collbebrg, Kristo, dumont, Gallagher made the jump this year and he's playing really well... all guys who could have an impact.
we're really lacking of potential there, but with the cap dropping teams may have to make decision and force trades and since we have a decent team with lots of cap space to sign our players and possibly add something during the summer.
i'd just really like Lou to find ways to get 2nd round picks this year since it's a very deep draft and since it's in NJ

It's really intellectually dishonest when you start listing defensemen along with forwards. And no, the Devils don't have that kind of depth. (Also Zack Phillips is having an awful first season in the AHL which suggests he's a product of Huberdeau). And I don't mind not having a bunch of scoring types in the organization - it'd be better if we did - but again, most of the players who will be the best forwards in the league in 2020 aren't part of any organization yet. There are some top forwards who aren't in the league at 20, but they are few and far between these days. You've got a potential top line of Henrique-Zajac-Kovalchuk, all of whom are under team control until 2017. You've got Matteau, under team control until 2019, looking like a 3rd line LW. And Josefson, who is still a 3rd line C in my mind. And then there's the defense which looks outstanding.
I wish there were more right-handed shots - I have to imagine that they will sign an undrafted free agent to that end this off-season. But if they sign Clarkson long-term, that's just not going to be a huge organizational need.
Cap dropping is not a concern at all.

Agree with most here, but what is Henrique? He obviously had that great rookie campaign and huge playoffs, but his play recently has been troubling. Not creating a lot of offense, as evidenced by his low shot total and I havent been impressed with him defensively either. If you go back even further, he didnt light up the AHL in his time there. I'm not saying he isnt going to be a 50-60 point forward in the future, but he sure as hell isnt a slam dunk imo

Eh, he was hurt to start the season and it's still a weird season. I would not put a ton of stock into any of the stats we see out of this season. Kind of like why Gio's 48 goal season wasn't an indicator of his future scoring. I don't know if he's a top line guy, but I think that unless he seriously regresses, he'll be a top 6 player.

I forgot to comment on this - it's really too bad New Jersey and Faust probably won't come to an agreement.... because that would be...a Devil's bargain.

Amazing stuff.
“I think winning against them in the big stage, not just for me, but for the fans of New Jersey, people that are supporting us and always take a second seat to these guys for whatever reason, now they’ve got to be pretty happy going to work and going to school and doing all their things that they do." - Martin Brodeur
