Fehr's implication is not that all teams spend to the cap - the cap and floor are determined by the midpoint. If everyone spends to the cap, escrow likely takes back salary unless the NHL beats last year's revenue by a significant margin.

The owners are going to get 50/50, just not right away. As Fehr has pointed out, yes, the NFL and NBA went to 50/50, but no one's paychecks were cut. Everyone got what their salary said.

When Fehr says the NHL offer is a 12% salary cut... is he not directly saying 57% dropping to 50%? ie ((50/57)-1)

I'm not as concerned about the public posturing as I am the people involved and their track records, from Bettman and the owners constantly using lockouts to get what they want, to Fehr's history of labor strife and intractibility in baseball. You literally couldn't have two worse people in charge with so much on the line for the league.

I agree, I didn't think that either side was dumb enough to get to this point and I was wrong, I didn't think they would be dumb enough to cancel any regular season games and that's going to happen as well.

With these idiots in charge, missing 2 seasons wouldn't even surprise me at this point.

I think outside influence would end it before 'that' point, the way it did with baseball and even to an extent hockey with mediation. I just wish there could be automatic mediation imposed the minute these billion dollar leagues locked out or went on strike.

Hopefully the threat of canceling the Winter Classic next week is a ploy to get negotiations started up again, but that would make too much sense. So they'll probably just cancel the Winter Classic next week. Because it's the NHL.

Well last time the season wasn't officially cancelled till February. And it was pretty close to done in '95 when mid-January was the drop dead date. They didn't have a moneymaker like the Classic then though. The season won't be officially canceled next week but nuclear war is beginning already. Even 50-50 might be off the table now that there won't be a full season.

The NHL is just pushing the bully tactics too far though. 50-50 wasn't as much a compromise as it was a pr stunt since the NHL offered 'no' givebacks at all. Every part of that proposal including 50-50 was a gain for the owners.

You're right in that it's probably the best deal the players do get, but that's not enough incentive to give away the store - FA rights, contract length, etc. Especially when the players got 57-43 and FA at 27 in the last CBA after being out a year. Plus Bettman had to know Fehr wasn't going to fold in October if he was half as smart as he thinks he is. Just take a look at the man's track record.

Both sides need to shelve their ego and agree to arbitration before they destroy the league since neither side is interested in negotiating. The owners treat negotiation like it's a free robbery and the players act like they're nailed to a cross.

Always darkest before the dawn - the 'cancellation of November' is a ploy. If the league and PA got a deal done by November 15th, are games going to be 'canceled'? Of course not. The NHL is running the playbook it thought it would.

Also the Winter Classic being canceled means nothing for the season's viability. It means both sides take a revenue hit. That's the good thing about linkage.
