A Jones, Larsson, Merrill 1-2-3 on our blueline would be insane, Jones looks incredible in this tourny so far. Honestly speaking though, if the Devils had the 1st overall pick, I would want Nathan Mackinnon. Lowest pick that could possibly get Jones would be #2.

Tough loss for sure. Pietla took a nasty hit from behind late in the 3rd and looked banged up afterwards. Hopefully he's ok.

I didn't think Camara should've even gotten a penalty for his hit, let a lone a game misconduct. Glad to see he isn't getting a suspension. That was the classic refs reacting to an injury and not the actual play. Credit Slovakia for hanging in that game so long, it was entertaining to watch for the most part.

Disappointing loss for the US against Russia, especially with a real tough game against Canada. I can't see the US winning that. Hopefully the Pietila injury is a minor knock and nothing more.

My sleep schedule is all over the place right now so I stayed up to watch the first 2 periods of US - Canada and then watched the 3rd period this morning. Tough loss for the US who now have to beat a tough Slovakia team to avoid going to the relegation round for a 2nd year in a row. Subban picked a great time to have his best game of the tournament. Gibson played well for the US as well. It's a shame the US kept taking dumb penalties after grabbing all the momentum midway in the 3rd. Props to Canada.

That Germany - Slovakia game actually turned out to be fantastic to watch. Both of those goalies played well and I was a bit surprised the Germans led the game for as long as they did.

Day 5 Results
Switzerland 4 vs 5 Finland (SO)
USA 1 vs 2 Canada
Latvia 2 vs 4 Czech Republic
Germany 1 vs 2 Slovakia (OT)

It's a much less physical game internationally and you have players who are used to playing physical and who are playing in the most important tournament of their lives to date. Still thought the US played pretty well, all things considered.

Wild 1st half to the opening period of the US - Slovakia game. The US takes an early lead on a breakaway goal by Bardreau but then Slovakia immediately answered back with their own breakaway goal by Matis. Few minutes later Vesey makes a great read to a creeping McCabe who lost his man and gave the US the lead. Vesey then put in another solid shift and his linemate Gaudreau, whose been struggling, gives the US a 3-1 lead prompting the Slovaks to play their back up goalie for the 1st time this tournament.

EDIT: Reilly adds a 4th goal for the US! Great start!
EDIT: Trouba PPG! US piling it on! Still 1st period!
EDIT: Gostibehere gets a major penalty for tapping a guy on the nuts?! They have cups on and Matis dove.
EDIT: Slovaks get their 2nd goal on the PP. Wild 1st.

You mean judging and critiquing a team's two game results isn't the way to go? USA played well in both games, the breaks just didn't go their way.

The refs are destroying the US - Czech Republic game and its not even halfway thru the 1st. So many weak calls. IMO none of the first 5 penalties of the game should've been called. International hockey can be tough to watch sometimes. Let them play.

Update 1st Per: Gaudreau scores on the 5 on 3! At least the last 2 penalties were legitimate but I'd still like to see the players allowed more leeway. Trouba is playing amazing, blocking shots, sound positionally, skating well.

1-0 US after 1

Pietila had a strong 1st. Awesome on the PK, getting involved in a 2 on 1, then reading a play well and accelerating quickly in the neutral zone to earn a solid scoring chance, and then intercepting a pass on the PK to get a breakaway to draw a penalty.

6-0 USA after 2!

Johnny Hockey (Gaudreau) with the hat trick, Barber with 2 goals that period, and Hartman. Pietila had another great chance to score but couldn't finish with under a minute left. Still he's having a great game and tournament. Great skating and understanding of the game. Hopefully the Czech's don't try to get dirty in the 3rd like they did in the 2nd, the US can't afford any suspensions/injuries with Canada coming up in the semis.

Psyched that the US will probably get another crack at Canada in the Semis, win or lose those two teams always put on great games.
