He's 35! He's definitely not a scorer, and he's being bought out by his current team. I don't agree with getting Gomez back on the Devils. I'm surprised people have overlooked these obvious (to me) red flags.

He just turned 33 and nobody expects him to score lots of goals.
What people hope is a Gomez who wants to turn his career around can be a depth forward in the bottom 6 who adds some creativity to a team that lacks creativity.

Is he 35? I thought he was a bit younger. I'm not thrilled at the possibility of him coming back but I remember the way he could skate the puck into offensive zone was something we missed until we got kovy. I also think he is a player that needs a lot of structure so I think we could succeed in the right role. If he signs a minimum contract why not? The beauty of a Gomez as a third-line/depth forward is that if you have a game (or playoff series) where one of your top two lines is not clicking, it's not completely scary to move Gomez up for a game or two.

Oh and for what it's worth, which I feel is probably not much, as of 730pm today ESPN.com changed gomez's player profile from Montreal Canadians to New Jersey devils as his current team.

ESPN uses some screwed up system, googling players and teams will put the wrong background on players and then your caching sometimes fixes it and sometimes doesn't, I think.

I expect there to be mutual interest, I'd almost be surprised if they don't reach a deal. I'm still surprised they want to put Kovalchuk on the RW. I'd like to see something like this:Reno lavoie just said on rds that Nj was reviewing the possibility to sign gomez... He's always spot on usually

A lot of talk about Gomez being terrible in terms of traditional scoring (goals/assists) on a terrible Montreal squad. Not many players are going to look good on teams like that, especially if you factor in his shooting luck. But the guy drove play and can carry the puck well...something no-one in our bottom 6 can do. And down the stretch the year before that, when he played with skilled players, he had 21 points in 23 games or thereabouts.
Like Triumph has pointed out - signing him would be a benefit simply because it might keep Tim Sestito from playing. Gomez, playing like he did last year, would still be an upgrade over Sestito.
It's time people got over him leaving for NYR, because if he signs in NJ he'll make the team better.
