Too bad this really helps the rangers 
They will buy out Redden this year so they have the cap room next year when Stephan(RFA) / Hagelin(RFA) / McDonagh(RFA) / Sauer(RFA) / Eminger(UFA) / Gilroy(UFA) all need new contracts. Granted they prob wont keem eminger / gilroy but still McDonagh is going to want tons of money same with hagelin and stephan. and oh yea go look at the next (2013-2014) free agent list for the rangers. http://capgeek.com/rangers/

I don't think it exactly "helps" the Rangers as much as it just shows some humanity for Redden and Gomez; allows them to play hockey again, which is a good thing.
It doesn't help the Rangers/Canadiens economically that they can make this move now vs. after this season; they STILL have the cap hit, they STILL have to pay them out, etc., but it helps Gomez/Redden that they can do it now instead of in July. I think the NHL/NHLPA just finally said, "ENOUGH of this cruel charade", keeping Gomez and Redden at home; for the love of hockey, it's better to give them another chance.
The new CBA allowed for them to buy out Redden in July, which they were going to do anyway. The new development as of yesterday allows them to buy out Redden today so he can maybe nab a contract somewhere this season.

See if the team buy them out before the season, they will get paid for this season the cap will be effected on this season 2013. Next year they will not effect the cap 2014, thats why I see it as a win for the rangers
