Play a two man game with a schlub. It's not working at all.
You are not giving me a name. Who is playing there? Butler's gone. Who's going there?

Bernier fits the description of schlub. Does it really matter, they had dumbass Nick in that role and he'll never come close to a first line role anywhere ever again?

Yeah - because Palmieri's game was actually well-suited to what the Devils wanted to do with Kovalchuk. He drives the net - that's his game. He's a bad passer and isn't particularly fast. Kovalchuk comes into the zone on the left wing and likes to find the guy driving the net or the defenseman coming late. And that line wasn't particularly good either, it just seems like they were, but they weren't.

Hedberg blows. I don't want to see him in net anymore.

Kovalchuk was. If you don't have anything, you gotta use what you got. It's not going to get Zajac's game going, he didn't do too much in that role, but they can't have Kovalchuk be this ineffective at ES and do anything.
sh!t, put Zids there. He showed more competence playing the wing than anyone they'll put opposite Kovalchuk since Zubrus got hurt.

Hell, call up Peter Harrold at forward.

The Devils massively outattempted Toronto at even strength after doing so against Buffalo.
And no, he wasn't. That line was totally even after Lemaire was hired. Even in shots, even in goals. And Kovalchuk was getting a lot of offensive zone starts (something he's not exactly getting this year).

And if you put him with Zajac now, he'd be pretty much even. Bob Carpenter even. Nothing ever happens.

As bad as Moose was tonight (and the past.....whenever), the problem that needs to be solved is special teams. Can't keep going 0-5 on the PP and expect to kill off 100% of the opposing chances every night. I'm starting to get deflated when I see the Devs up a man. You know that if they don't score there's a world of sh*t in their heads. I'd like to see NJ score a few PP goals and then take the pulse of the team. Nothing would do more to cure the miserable atmosphere right now. Kovy is a damn sniper. Stop having him QB'ing this thing and just plant himself ala Brett Hull in the circle and bomb away (how Gomez used Mogilny). Sheet, even if it's blocked he'll leave a hobbled dman to worry about the next blast. Shoot the f'n puck on net Kovy!
Come on NJ. The great start has made this sh*t sandwich at least edible since the playoffs are still in sight. Let's go out tomorrow night and end the 1st period up 3. If there's one team in the league the absolutely own, it's Tampa. Right team. Right time. Get this f'n thing done.

Tampa is going to be tough with Hedberg or Kinkaid in net. Hedberg has hit rock bottom and I'm sure Kinkaid isn't looking forward to starting his first NHL game against the league's leading scorer.

The first goal was going to be a goal anyway, he just managed to make a lowlight out of it. Not even sure I want to blame him on it, the Leaf on the other side of the crease was wide open.

Which is fine. That's what the Devils are trying to do - play low-event hockey. What did playing run and gun in Atlanta ever get Kovalchuk other than a huge contract? Kovalchuk's a break-even or worse player playing Atlanta's style and he's the same here. Would you rather have him be scoring more and giving up more, or scoring less and giving up less? With the NHL's point system it's a no-brainer.
Here's a look at it from someone who watches the Leafs a lot: http://t.co/N3WtGKukS9
