The Post added that Lecavalier could potentially re-sign with the Lightning at a cheaper rate as an unrestricted free agent. The deal would have got the Lightning out from under Lecavalier's $7.7 million salary cap hit. The 33-year-old has seven years and $45 million left on his contract. A buyout would pay him $30 million over 14 years
Honestly, I wouldn't call that cap circumvention on the surface. Toronto is wasting cap space in the deal (they don't care at all about the cash); while getting another asset as well; Tampa is getting salary relief and other consideration.
Now if they have the conversation with Lecavalier that basically amounts to contract renegotiation prior; then that would be circumvention to me. But if Toronto buys him out, he should be able to negotiate fairly with all 29 teams... and if he decides he wants to stay in Tampa; he decides that.
It's a slippery slope though and I guess that's Daly's point.
