I know Gavrus is expected to put up
big numbers but wow that's pretty impressive. What are his odds at making the nhl and how far off is he from getting a pro contract?

Sunday 12/22
WJC Exhibition
USA defeated Finland 3-2
Stefan Matteau LW: E, 4 PIM (Tripping, Roughing), 5 Shots
Steve Santini D: E

Observations from the 1st period:
-- LW Stefan Matteau once again skated on a line with Andrew Copp ('13 4/104 WPG) and Hudson Fasching ('13 4/118 LAK). D Santini was on a pair with Will Butcher ('13 5/123 COL) again.

-- Matteau also got PP time with Jack Eichel (2015) and Ryan Hartman ('13 1/30 CHI) up front and Brady Skjei ('12 1/28 NYR) and Jacob Slavin ('12 4/120) at the points.

-- With D Brett Pesce ('13 3/66 CAR) being cut, Santini has officially made the team. The US is now set with their 3 goaltenders and 7 defensemen.

-- With C/RW Henrik Samuelsson ('12 1/27 PHX) cut, the US will need to cut one more forward. They are going to wait as long as possible to do that since forwards Adam Erne ('13 2/33 TBL) and Tyler Motte ('13 4/121) have been out sick. I think Matteau will make the team since he's been consistently used on the 3rd line with the same linemates.

Team Canada Note:
-- Apparently D Matt Dumba may be facing a suspension for a hit earlier today. Canada is already going to be missing D Griffin Reinhart for their first 3 games from a carry over suspension from last year. There appears to be a *small* chance that Damon Severson could be recalled since Sutter would rather not go with 5 D for potentially the first 3 games if Dumba gets suspended.

big numbers but wow that's pretty impressive. What are his odds at making the nhl and how far off is he from getting a pro contract?

I'd say his odds of making the NHL aren't that high but he is a nice project/wildcard prospect that they were able to grab in the 6th round due to him suffering 2 concussions in his draft year.

Hockey Prospect's 2012 draft write up on him mentions that he's an above average skater, has good vision offensively, a good shot, and is a threat on the PP but his overall game needs work. Seemed like he struggled to adjust to North American rinks and put himself in some bad positions to be hit which led to the concussions. Some draft rankings had him in the 2nd/3rd round range but Hockey Prospect had him as a mid round prospect.

I think their is a decent shot that the Devils sign him to an ELC and have him in Albany next year but I wouldn't mind if they let him play another year overseas since he may take awhile to develop, if at all. I'm pretty sure the Devils have to sign him by a June 1 (?), 2014 deadline or else he would re-enter the draft for one last time.

Thursday 12/26
WJC
USA defeated Czech Republic 5-1
Stefan Matteau LW: +1, 2 PIM (Slashing), 1/1 Faceoff* Best Player
Steve Santini D: E

LW Matteau skated on a line with Andrew Copp ('13 4/104 WPG) and Hudson Fasching ('13 4/118 LAK) and was on the PP. D Santini was on a pair with Will Butcher ('13 5/123 COL) and played on the PK.

Chris Peters

"USA Standouts from Game 1 for me: Matteau-Copp-Fasching line, Barber, Grzelcyk, Santini, Skjei, Gillies, Eichel, Hinostroza."

"Stefan Matteau named Team USA's player of the game. Interesting choice, but his line with Andrew Copp, Hudson Fasching was fantastic."

Corey Pronman

Re Matteau: "Good speed & power. Didn't create a ton, but was semi-noticeable."

Re Santini: "He was solid. Mobile, physical, made stops, basic with the puck"

United States of Hockey Recap

Stefan Matteau — Matteau was named Team USA’s Player of the Game, which was an interesting choice to me since he didn’t find the scoresheet in a 5-1 game, but I think that has a lot to do with how well that line with Copp and Fasching played. Matteau played with speed and physicality and was just a handful for the Czechs. He did take one penalty on an ill-advised slash, but mostly he played the way the U.S. needs him to. He just narrowly missed the team last year and after speaking with him at the camp in Minneapolis, he is really relishing this opportunity. He needs to be great for the U.S. and he was in Game 1.

Steven Santini — I thought Santini was fantastic throughout the game and made his often quiet defensive play noticeable. He had one iffy shift the whole game, I thought. He was physical, delivering the game’s biggest hit among others, and he showed his good defensive stick and positioning. His skating is an underrated asset of his as he closes in on opposing forwards quickly and finds himself in the right place a lot. He could end up seeing his minutes grow in this tournament.

Steven Santini — Once again, I thought Santini was Team USA’s best defender overall. His skating ability and physical play were out there for all to see in this game again. For a younger guy, he’s very smart and closes gaps so well.

Stefan Matteau — Matteau played physically and his strength on the puck was notable. He did score a goal on a nice finish from the slot.

USA defeated Germany 8-0

Steve Santini D: Goal (PP), +1, 2 PIM (Interference), 1 Shot

United States of Hockey

7. Steven Santini (Grzelcyk, Kerdiles), 10:39 (pp) — On yet another power play, Team USA got experimental. Santini was put used as the net-front forward despite being a defensive defenseman. It paid off. Grzelcyk’s shot went off Santini’s shin pads for a goal.

Steven Santini — Again, Santini has been wow-worthy in his own zone. It’s tougher to gauge on a game like today’s, but he was solid throughout. When he got thrown out on the PP for the first time, probably all season, he got a goal. He’s been really good throughout the tournament, so it was nice to see him get on the score sheet.

I'm waiting for the day that someone doesn't have something good to say about Santini. It seems he never has an off day from what I've seen. Great pick by Conte and the scouting team.

Still wish the Devils kept that earlier second rounder?

USA lost to Canada 3-2
Stefan Matteau LW: Goal, +1, 2 PIM (Tripping), 2 Shots
Steve Santini D: E, 1 Shot

United States of Hockey

Steven Santini — Again, I thought Santini was consistently one of Team USA’s best overall defenders. He was physical, he was smart and I really liked his decisions with the puck today. He’s a better skater than he’s been given credit for and does a nice job of getting the puck out of trouble.

Stefan Matteau — I’ve liked the way Matteau has played throughout the tournament, though he has taken a few too many penalties. The one against him today was a soft call, but unfortunately that’s how it can go some times. Matteau’s size and speed was a factor a lot today and he plays hard every game. He was a big part of making that team so good in the first period with the way he was driving the net and making plays in the offensive zone physically.

Still wish the Devils kept that earlier second rounder?

I know some people wanted the Devils to take Dauphin instead of moving back to grab Santini and gain the pick to get Kujawinski but I loved the deal at the time, and love it even more now. Like you said, Santini seems to get positive reviews from everywhere.

I wouldn't be shocked if he and Severson moved quickly into the NHL post college and juniors respectively. Potentially having Larsson, Merrill, Severson, Santini, and Gelinas as the anchors on the blue line in a few years is intriguing. Plus guys like Helgeson, Hrabarenka, Scarlett, and Gedig could be useful role pieces. Definitely gives Lou the option to either have a cheap young D group so he can spend money on forwards or the option to make a trade for a decent, young forward with one of the young D getting moved out.

Devils prospect pool as a whole may be underwhelming due to the forwards dragging it down but these defensemen really give me hope for the future.

Also to get back to Kujawinski. He's been inconsistent (again) this year but he definitely seems to have the tools to develop into a NHL player. Dauphin is the superior prospect without a doubt but it's not like their basic stat lines are that different.

Dauphin: 33 GP 15-16-31, -6, 31 PIM in the Q
Kujawinski: 30 GP 16-11-27, E, 27 PIM in the O

You could probably say that Dauphin is playing on a worse team but Kujawinski the tougher competition.

Great offensive numbers for Bell, but considering that he's an overage junior player, I'm assuming there's not really much to take from this hot spell he's on?

THE NHL MUST LOVE THE DEVILS - from who else? A RANGER fan!
[Mark Messier]: A big, bald attention whore with a stupid Easter Island-lookin face. - from who else? DaneykoIsGod!

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?
- Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.

Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

He plays the point on the PP. Guy who does PBP for Kelowna said this on twitter today:

Regan Bartel ‏@Reganrant

@onepasthunter @TStivali He is indeed at blue line. His shot - particularly his wrist/snap shot - is best I have ever seen at this level.

It's only his second year playing forward so it may be hard to project what kind of growth curve he is on.

Your unconditional rejection of violence makes you smugly think of yourselves as noble, as enlightened, but in reality it is nothing less than abject moral capitulation to evil. Unconditional rejection of self-defense, because you think its a supposed surrender to violence, leaves you no resort but begging for mercy or offering appeasement.

Just a question for the posters who know more about our prospects : Do you guys think Mike Hoeffel has a good chance of playing in the NHL with the devils? I didn't remember him playing for the US in the WJC, and he had pretty good stats in the NCAA. Do you think he'll be on the devils roster someday?

I doubt it since he hasn't really put up points at all at the AHL level and guys like Matteau and Boucher have passed him on the depth chart at LW. I've read he's always been more of a defensive forward but 0.22 points per game at the AHL level is pretty low. Even Stephen Gionta had a better rate.
