It is kind of funny that a "favor pick" is doing better than most legitimate 7th rounders (who are all long shots anyway as know)

It's kind of like winning $5 on a $2 scratch off

He was also named third star of the Q for the week of Jan 6-12.

Like the scratchoff analogy.  He could've gone to the Q and been awful.  At least he's enjoying a little success.

To be fair, it also doesn't hurt that he's playing for one of the better teams in his league.

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?

Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

Tuesday 1/14
KHL
Dinamo Minsk lost to Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk 6-0
Artur Gavrus F: -4, 1 Shot, 11:02 TOI
Season: 25 GP 1-2-3, -6, 8 PIM, 3.0 SH%, 1.3 SH/GP, 45.5 FO%, 11:44 ATOI

It is worth noting that Dinamo Minsk is really, really bad. I still wonder where (if) he's going to play during the nearly month long Olympic break.

That's just it.  He isn't doing better than most 7th round picks.  There are ostensibly what, 75 starting goalies in all of junior hockey?  Not all of them are drafted.

So what are most 7th round picks doing?  Not saying that Anthony is doing better or worse than most 2013 7th rounders, just wondering how you know what they're all doing, and how you're basing your comparisons.

NCAA
Ohio State lost to Minnesota 1-0
Curtis Gedig D: -1, 1 Shot

-- Was on for Minnesota's goal, gave Cammarata too much room and got beat to a loose puck in front of the net for the goal. Played a ton of minutes in all situations and was effective minus a few dicey plays against #1 Minnesota's swift, skilled forwards.

North Dakota tied Bemidji State 1-1
Derek Rodwell RW: -1, 6 Shots, 1 Block

Miami tied Nebraska Omaha 2-2
Blake Coleman C: DNP (Collarbone Injury)

-- According to this article, he won't return until next month.

Harvard lost to Cornell 3-2
Alex Kerfoot C: -1, 2 Shots, 5/10 Faceoffs

USHS
Information on Miles Wood is limited but this is encouraging (New England Hockey Journal):
"Noble & Greenough (10-3-1) – The Bulldog offense is on fire with 26 goals in its last three games. Junior forward Miles Wood recorded at least three goals in each of those three games."

Other

Not a Devils prospect but 20 year old Michigan State goalie, Jake Hildebrand, who attended prospect camp last summer is having a nice follow up campaign to a freshman year where he earned team MVP and Outstanding Rookie awards. He put up a 48 save shutout against Penn State last night while playing on a MSU team that isn't that much better than the newly formed D1 program at PSU. He now has a 2.21 GAA and .929 SV% in 17 games this season. He had a 2.35 GAA and .928 SV% in 29 games last year. He's not big but he comes out and plays his angles well and has smooth lateral movement in his crease.

About time Miles Wood put up some points, 1.4 PPG is absolutely terrible in high school system given his age.

He's got 13 goals in 32 games this year, so I'd say so.  He's an overage player, but he's doing well this year.

Just looking at stats for other players that came to mind, it seems like he's somewhere between a pure goon projection (Janssen and PL3) and guys that basically turned into goons that can provide some offense occasionally (Dan Carcillo).

As an aside, I hypothesized that his stats might be similar to Aaron Ashem. In his draft year, Ashem was more than a PPG player for Sarnia.

I came across this interview with ex-Devils prospect Kirill Tulupov (3/67 2006) who some of you may remember seeing highlight videos of his big hits on youtube from his Q days. The interview is old (12/7/2011) but is really insightful as he talks about a wide variety of topics including being a young Russian player in North America and what led to the Devils not signing him in 2008. Some interesting tidbits:

PT:  There have been some issues with a few teams and their Russian players. It must be difficult for the players due to huge cultural issues, language issues, feeling as though you are in an alien land, etc.

Tulupov:  There are many, many issues. It could even be the food, language, many things.  Even friends.  Talking. Not many Russian guys know English. You don’t want to be by yourself all the time. I don’t like when they always speak about Russians chasing money and they return home to get more money. It’s not really hard for us to sit a couple of games if we are doing something wrong. We are willing to change. There are not many people to support you and the media is always ready to rip on you if there comes a chance. Hard pill to swallow.

------

PT: You were drafted in 2006 by the New Jersey Devils. Your style of play seems to fit the Devils Organization perfectly. What happened? Why did they opt out?

Tulupov:  Right after the NHL draft they offered me a contract. My father still keeps it on the wall. He was very proud of me. The more so, because that Devils were the club where his favorite player Fetisov had played and coached. Long time ago he bought me Fetisov’s The Overtime. It was my guide book in the world of Hockey. I still keep it along with me. Under that contract my AHL money amounted to $33,700. It was the matter of discussion but the agent – my previous agent – backed off. He decided to turn it down without any negotiations. Two years later I was really high in their prospect system, I was the second best defenseman overall, and the sixth in the top 20 list. From the very beginning I moved up from 13th spot to 6th spot, almost double, and 2nd best defenseman right after Corrente, the very first round pick of 2006 – a defenseman too but they opted to let me go this time. You have to know Devils’ GM Lou to understand that he never offers something twice for a player taken in the 3rd round. I trusted my agent but I was wrong. One more year in Q as a 20-year-old somehow calmed me down.

------

PT: This past summer was very painful for the entire hockey world – first, the deaths of Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak — and then the unimaginable happened when the Yaroslav Lokomotiv team died in a plane crash. I assume you knew some of those players, probably even played with them during your career.

Tulupov:  I had two good friends on the Lokomotiv team. One of them was drafted the same year with me in the New Jersey Devils. We played together in the National U-20. He was a 2nd round pick, the forward Alexander Vasyunov. And I was playing in the Q with another forward, Sergei Ostapchuk. Even now it’s very painful to think about. I was in Detroit at the time. It is an accident. It can happen with anybody, anywhere in the world. It is hard enough for us as hockey players, but I can’t imagine how hard it is for those close to these players. So terrible.

Interesting - that AHL money thing must be after taxes.  I also don't really buy it, players of his caliber also get signing bonuses, so yeah he would've only made 50k a year in the AHL before taxes but he also would've gotten a signing bonus of $60k or so every year.

As for Ben Johnson, I don't think a player with an NHL contract can go back to junior for an overage season, can he?  If the Devils don't sign him, he goes back into the 2014 draft.

The one thing that seemed odd to me from Tulupov was that he was offered a contract soon after the draft according to him. I never really paid too much attention to that sort of thing but it seems like that is more reserved for 1st rounders and not 3rd rounders. I could be wrong though.

I think you are correct on that NHL/CHL overage thing. I tried to look it up but couldn't really find anything but it would make sense that the CHL wouldn't allow overage players on NHL deals. I wonder if he's really worth signing, maybe a NCAA FA would offer more upside instead, especially from an offensive standpoint?

Austin Czarnik is a 21 yr old junior C for Miami and has a 1.03 points per game rate in 103 career NCAA games. He was ranked by some scouting services for his draft years but his size hurt his value.

F Cody Wydo from Robert Morris attended Devils prospect camp and in his age 22 season as a junior he has the 3rd highest goals per game rate for NCAA FA's at 0.68 and is averaging 3.41 shots per game.

LW Kevin Goumas who is a 22 yr old senior for New Hampshire and attended Devils prospect camp in 2012 has a 0.93 points per game rate in 131 career NCAA games. He has a solid 10-18-28 line in 25 games and is averaging 3 shots per game.

Those are just some names I'm throwing out there. Albany has a roster crunch with forwards but what I'm getting at is maybe the Devils are better off letting a guy like Johnson go and try to sign a FA prospect instead.
