I just got this email...

The New Jersey Devils have the greatest most passionate fans and we thank you for being such a key part to our success, both on and off the ice. As an integral part of our Devils Family, your opinion is important to us and we want to hear from you!

The goal song is changing and this is YOUR chance to submit the song you’d like to have played during the one moment we all relish to experience together. Starting NOW, the Devils organization will be taking submissions as to what you’d like the new goal song to be.

Here’s how it works:

Submit your song of choice Submissions will be taken up until October 27th at 11:59pm Over the next three home games, a different song will be played at each game based upon submissions The most submitted song as of 10/18 will be the goal song played during the 10/19 home game The most submitted song as of 10/23 will be the goal song played during the 10/24 home game The most submitted song as of 10/28 will be the goal song played during the 10/29 home game From October 30th to November 1st, all fans will have the ability to vote on their song of choice based upon the songs that were previously played in the last four home games The new fan voted goal song will be revealed on Saturday, November 2 when the Devils take on the Flyers

Submit now as 10 fans will also be randomly chosen to receive a pair of Club Seats to the November 2 game which also includes a photo on the ice post-game. Official Contest Rules

We look forward to seeing you at The Rock soon!

We all know they should have just done this in the first place.  At least they are making amends and trying instead of being stubborn.

Making some pretty big assumptions about even being able to play a goal song over the next three home games...

And that's really how we should be looking at it.  Some organizations would take the "we're still plowing ahead, this will work" tact.  Regardless of what led us to this point, they are acknowledging their mistakes and trying to make things right.  And quickly.

I just hope fans don't waste their vote with R&R Part 2 submissions.  It's gone and it's never coming back.  At least the franchise is showing a willingness to work with its fanbase, belated or not.

Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?

Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

I would bet the house on the fact that Rock and Roll Part II is going to be the most suggested goal song they received for all of those time periods.

I wouldn't doubt that given what this fanbase has become in the last 5-10 years.

Looks like we also got the "official" reason why the goal song was changed.  We pretty much knew why but interesting to see it from the horses mouth

We all said it happen once the kids of the 90's Devils got old enough to come to games, we'd have a larger, younger, more energetic fanbase. Unfortunately, a side effect of a younger fanbase is that it will be made up of young people, who find chants like 'you suck' and 'Rangers suck Flyers swallow' to be ingenious. I love that the energy is a lot higher these days, but when you have younger fans, you need to expect some sophomoric things to happen.

I hope something else stupid gets chanted during whatever new song they pick

I mean, 8 songs out of 10 will probably have some point or another, or at least a chant-friendly beat that people will be yelling "You suck!" to... And it will be funny, and ironic when they figure it out on a large coordinated scale haha..

This was my submission. Ideally, it'd be some kind of edited version that would start with the beginning intro and then after a few looped bars break into the outro at 2:31..

yeah but it seems to be a little too late. In the Devil groups I'm in a lot of them are submitting that song. :(

Honestly, I will take the mostly full, energetic crowds chanting "you suck" after goals are scored over the half empty, lifeless crowds that this team had for years.  To be totally honest, I didn't like the "you suck" chant when it first started and didn't participate for the first few years.  I thought it was sophomoric and a little crude (which it is). But it grew on me and I came to embrace it.  And there's no doubting that the crowd got behind the chant over the years where people of all ages were doing it after goals were scored.  I will go into the new song with an open mind, but I have a feeling that this is going to be another epic fail for this organization, which is nothing new for them.

Unfortunately, I get the feeling that we are in for some very small mid-week crowds this season based upon what I saw opening night, the utter lack of ticket deals thus far, and the plain fact that there is very little exciting about this team right now.

They really pissed a lot of people off with the way they went about handling the change on opening night after playing the old goal song throughout the pre-season.  They probably understood that there was going to be some sort of backlash, but I don't think anyone could have predicted it being this big.  It will be interesting to see if the booing and chants of "bring it back" persist after the "new" goal song is finally selected on November 2.  If it does, this team has a huge problem on their hands.  You can't have your fans booing after every goal the home team scores all season, can you?

The initial approach was clearly an epic fail, but now they're leaving the song choice up to us, so to blame the Devils for whatever happens now isn't really fair.

I'm hardly clean-mouthed myself...I don't curse in front of children or in select other situations, but I let the f-bombs and other goodies fly and fly a lot.  I am pretty hard to offend.  So on that level, I couldn't care less about the "you suck" thing (though I was never a participant in that part of it myself...I stopped at "Hey!").  But I am surprised that some people seem to think it's so important to keep "you suck" going, no matter what...almost like it's life-or-death somehow.

Over the last few years certain fans started chants that offended a large portion of our fan base and turned off others.

Chants plural? I bet the flyers swallow/rangers suck people are going to be politely asked to stop soon too.

honestly i find it funny how some on here and others on facebook are getting so pissed bc they cant yell "you suck" anymore bc the song is changing.  Its a 30 second song they're changing, its not the end of the world.  Rangers and Islanders fans have no problem with not chanting "you suck" when they score. (yes i know the isles did it but they quickly changed the song and the chants stopped)

I think there's definitely a bit of a "You're not going to hold me down and tell me I can't say 'you suck' anymore maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan" thing going on among some.

I didn't parttake, but for me it's just not that important to keep it going at all costs.  All you have to do is listen to the 2000 SCF highlights, and all you hear is "HEY!"  Seemed like everyone was having a great time back then.

Just scanning FB with posts about this news, a lot of people are flipping out over this.  However about 85-90% who are flipping out over it are in the 27 and under crowd, so this is definitely a generational thing.  Hell just reading in between the lines from the statement on the link I posted alluded to this as well.

Some are threating to even cancel their season tickets over this.  This is how much a chant of "you suck" means to these people.

Yet when the Devils have failed to hold a STH perk, the VIP pass to the equipment sale, for 2 years in a row which is part of the package they paid money for, the uproar was not nearly as big as this.  Says a lot about this fanbase and its priorities.

I could get behind "Shout at the Devil" by Motley Crue, "The Whip" by Locksley, and "Bro Hymn" by Pennywise/"Pennywise Tribute" by Bassnectar. Anything along those lines would make me happy.
