Saw this on HF and the response given is actually my feelings as well... If the new owners really think a hockey game will ever be a completely "family friendly" environment, with "please" and "thank you" and mutual respect between opposing fans, they are seriously mistaken.

If they really follow through with that then they are opening up one of the biggest cans of worms I have ever seen. They are doing everything so ass backwards, its hysterical. If they really want people to sit in there seats peacefully like there Gandhi or only want them to participate in cheesy "Lets Go Devils" type chants then they are absolutely clueless when it comes to hockey atmospheres.

------------------------------------------

This too, especially the last sentence:

The volatility of a STH base is very highly dependent on the success of any team. So by strength I pretty much just mean number. All things considered, 12k STH is far more than what Hugh had to work with in New Orleans. He was working with 5-6k. He was in a situation where he had to resort to walking down the streets and asking businesses to buy tickets.

The Devils are not at that stage. He forged a family-friendly and community atmosphere by using the Hurricane, community, unity as a battle cry. It worked. It FIT New Orleans. That model does NOT fit New Jersey. Yes Sandy was awful but it's not the same here. Nowhere near the same.

So why is this guy using the same model, practically, for an organization with far more stability than a team who could have moved very literally the following year?

If your job is to "build a fan base" and you derp your way around a goal song and learn that 90% of the fans want it, why are you going to piss off 90% of your fans? THE MERITS OF WHETHER OR NOT IT'S ADMIRABLE OR STUPID FOR PEOPLE TO DROP TICKETS ASIDE. If people are mad, threatening to leave, if your team is awful - why in the world are you forcing the issue?

He's not doing his job. His job isn't PC police. It's to increase our fan base. He should be going to colleges in NJ and bringing NJ and the cheerleaders, handing out vouchers. He should be going to Rutgers football games, concerts in the area, sponsoring charities and walks targeted at the youth (you know, the people who will pay the bills in 3-4 years).

You have to adapt to your situation. Know your demographic. Hockey IS NOT a family-friendly sport.

I'm sorry but hockey is a family friendly sport .  After all if it wasn't a family friendly sport it would never grow in popularity, nor would any of us be hockey fans bc if it was not a family friendly sport we prob wouldn't have been at games as a kid.  Are there some teams that are more family friendly then others, yes, BUT IN ORDER TO GROW YOUR FAN BASE YOU NEED TO BE FAMILY-FRIENDLY.  I just find it funny how people are so upset because they cant chant an UNORIGINAL,CHILDISH "you suck".   GROW UP!, there are bigger things to worry about that, and if you feel that strongly about it DON't GO.  (and in case your wondering I'm 26, so I'm in the under 30 demographic that people label as being part of the you suck chant)

The goal song is not why there was only 13,302 people in the arena tonight.

No, the reason there was no one there is zero marketing effort and awful fan relations. But the song has nothing to do with that, obviously.

I almost couldn't blame the fans for booing after the first one just because it was so bad...almost couldn't blame them.

-NHL record for most home wins in the playoffs - 12-1 in '03

I have no idea who (if anyone) voted for that. I've never even heard of the artist and I write for a music site. I thought Devils fans were pimping out FOB, My Chemical Romance and Gaslight Anthem. I was expecting one of those three tonight. Not some random ass "Monster Truck" song. (LOLWHO)

It sounded like a bunch of noise tonight. Random ass noise and I have no idea how anyone could say that was a good goal horn. It deserved the Bon Jovi response that it got tonight because I think managment is just pulling our chain and picking their own songs with a winner already in mind.

Just the way management and the select minority group of fans want it.

building was pretty dead tonight. Only 13,200 and it looked it. Haven't seen that small a crowd in a while.

Even that section 122 group sounded subdued. It also sounded like they got marching orders. Whenever a "Rangers Suck/Flyers Swallow/Crosby Watches chant got started they tried to drown it out with Lets Go Devils.

I don't even remember what the goal song was. Some generic rock tune. Didn't sound too terrible. I was just happy to see a goal in person. But after the song stopped playing there were very audible boos. And it wasn't just 1 section. It was coming from all sides

I hated the atmosphere today. You have RR part 2 gone, people booing after goals, Diablos under surveillance, obscene chants still going on, Diablos shouting down obscene chants, still some audible YOU SUCKS after goals.

what a mess

It wasn't even a good generic rock tune. It just sounded like jumbled noise. It brought nothing to the atmosphere of the building whatsoever. This doesn't even have to do with being able to chant "You suck" to it. You couldn't even chant HEY! HEY! HEY! or anything at all to that thing. There was quite a bit of booing by my section after the song was over.

Oh they definitely got marching orders...they wouldn't chant 'WE ARE...JERSEY!' on their own volition   Kinda sad really, me and Zubie#8 were making puppet jokes about it.
