The lack of rhythm in their offensive game really hurt the New Jersey Devils as they surrendered a lead against the Columbus Blue Jackets to end up losing the game, continuing their poor start to the year.

After starting the season with a 0-3-4 record, the Devils were able to conquer their first win of the season against the New York Rangers, and they looked poised to gain some momentum as they traveled to Columbus to face a potent Blue Jackets lineup, but their efforts weren’t enough as they were severely outplayed by the hosts.

The biggest problem for the Devils tonight is that they weren’t very efficient going forward. Their efforts weren’t the best as they struggled to create open spaces going forward, meaning that the shots they were able to place against Sergei Bobrovsky weren’t risky.

In the first clear chance they had, however, the Devils were able to find the back of the net after Michael Ryder netted a PP goal to put New Jersey on the driver’s seat of the game in the second period. Sadly for them, their lead didn’t last long as Brandon Dubinsky and Cam Atkinson turned the game around quickly for the Blue Jackets in the second period.

A third goal from James Wisniewski early in the final period killed all the comeback hopes for the Devils, who saw Marian Gaborik score an empty-netter with less than a minute left on the clock.

If there’s one thing to highlight from the Devils’ performance today, it has to be the spectacular performance from goaltender Cory Schneider who’s currently replacing Martin Brodeur after the veteran started the season struggling. Schneider allowed three goals in 23 shots, but there could’ve been much more as he had to make several spectacular saves to keep his team in the game.

New Jersey definitively needs to improve their performance if they want to repeat their successful recent seasons. The current play of the team, especially the forward lines, is not enough, and if they don’t turn it around soon, this could be a long year for the Devils.
