The New Jersey Devils enjoyed their first win of the season on Saturday when they took a 4-0 victory from the slumping New York Rangers.

They did this without their best offensive player so far in Damien Brunner. He was out with what coach Peter DeBoer called upper body soreness. He is now 100 percent healthy. He will be put back into the lineup against tonight’s opponent, the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Devils were a very one-dimensional team offensively in the first seven games. Most of that offense came from Brunner, Patrik Elias and Jaromir Jagr. That was not the case against the Rangers. Nine players got on the score sheet in that game between goals and assists.

Brunner is going to add even more scoring than they had against the Rangers. He is currently tied for the lead on the team’s forwards with Jagr. He has three goals and two assists on the season. If the team can play like they did on Saturday and add Brunner, and eventually Elias and Ryane Clowe, the offense will turn itself around this season.

Extended efforts in the past couple of games from Adam Henrique, Travis Zajac and Michael Ryder have added a boost. They scored four goals despite recording a season-low 19 shots.

The Blue Jackets come in with a 3-5 record this season. They ended a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. Both the Blue Jackets and the Devils have been hard strapped for goals so far. They rank 23rd and 24th in the league in goals per game. Both teams will look to turn their seasons around for good.
