Without every hearing these comments, I would have guessed Elias and Clarkson were not friendly at all. Probably heard Clarkson do 30 interviews thanking vets from NJ during his entire career, and Elias was never mentioned once.
Elias might be well respected as a vet, but I don't think he is so friendly with many of the North American guys. Don't really care either way.
As for ripping Kovy during his time here, I don't know...I thought he had done a fairly good job over the last year and a bit in the defensive end. He wasn't meant for the Devils offensive system and a player of his skill shouldn't have to be.
On another note, I don't get why these foreign players feel comfortable talking to media overseas and giving them quotes they never would here. The controversial comments always come back to North America. For all we know, these comments were surrounded by some positive stuff, but who knows. A lot of people can make the case that many years Elias wasn't worth $6 million and he won't be worth the $5+ for the next 3 seasons.
I'm not saying Elias is a saint and can do no wrong. I'm more saying I think he's got some interesting opinions, some of which would probably be surprising. What he's saying in this case isn't really all that controversial, if you think about it...neither player is a teammate of Elias' anymore. Kovy might as well be playing on another planet, and who knows, maybe if Clarkson ever hears about these commetns, he goes out of his way to throw a check at Elias next time the Devils play the Leafs. Not like anything's really coming out of any of this.
I don't think he was ever really going to leave. Probably just a power move his agent told him to do to get a better contract from Lou. Same thing Marty did last year.
Supposedly, he was all set to go to the Rangers if Sather had been willing to put a no-trade clause in his contract...Sather refused, so he stayed with the Devils and signed his 7-year, $42 million deal that turned out to be pretty good overall (but was looking pretty shaky after the first two seasons, especially during that 4 goals in 44 GP stretch.)

THE NHL MUST LOVE THE DEVILS - from who else? A RANGER fan!
[Mark Messier]: A big, bald attention whore with a stupid Easter Island-lookin face. - from who else? DaneykoIsGod!
Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime? - Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.
Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.
It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.
