About the game: Gelinas was pretty dreadful. And, aside from a nice assist, I was livid with Jagr all game. I blame the first goal 100% on him.. Gelinas saw him up ice and passed it, Jagr didn't realize and it went past him for an icing. Jagr moped slowly back to the circle, took two strides after the faceoff, and watched his point man fire a rocket towards the net. Really lazy looking stuff. But, hey, he's like sixty.

Jagr was going to the bench for a line change.  That was on Gelinas for making a dumb pass to a guy clearly going off after he was on the ice for a full minute.

I don't disagree that the initial play was Gelinas' mistake, but Jagr prides himself in his stamina at his age, and he was dogging it that whole faceoff.

I do enjoy whoever ran down DeBoer for not calling a timeout - you do realize that Anaheim used its timeout after an icing and the Devils scored anyway?

And?  That doesn't mean Boudreau made the wrong call, it just didn't work.  But there's slightly more of a reason to call timeout in our situation than your normal run-of-the mill icing in the second period when you're talking about a 41-year old and a 37-year old being on the ice for a full minute.   Of course with our luck the only one that got off was Zajac in favor of Gionta.

A full minute?  Wow - there'd need to be 4 timeouts in a game if that's what calls for a timeout.  Unfortunately I can't get a good shift chart of tonight's game, but I don't think they were out for an inordinate amount of time.

That was a good hockey game.  Both teams played well, and made it entertaining.  Cory wasn't bad, but I'd like him to play better than he did tonight.  Both Devils goals were pretty sick.  Those backdoor plays rarely work, and the Devils made them work tonight.  Sucks to lose, but I'll take the point.  No reason to be too upset.

deboer was giving merrill and gelinas a lot of time in a lot of different situations.

then they had a bad game against a good team like pens if i can remember (i cant) around when volch got hurt.

i just dont understand zid with gelinas, is my point

and then merrill and gelinas get beat by a wraparound on a 4 on 4

that 4th line looked bad all night.

lol Gionta had nothing to do with the OT goal but let's kill Pete for the two rookie d-men screwing up because the scapegoat was on the ice.

Funny how Gionta's so hated here and yet at the arena he got practically a standing ovation when he was announced back in the lineup the other night.

That's wonderful. His career is a nice story. You don't see it often in the NHL, and it helps that his last name is Gionta. But the crowd also loves Janssen, and he cna't play much either. You can cheer for underdogs, and that's fine, but there is a disconnect between his abilities and limitations and what Deboer thinks he can do.

That is what is so frustrating. You have Gionta playing on a 4th line for 7 minutes, and it is passable. And that is being nice. He is an AHLer who can fill a role in the 4th line. If he stayed on the 4th line, I could deal with it. His line usually gets dominated But he gets PK time, and he is not very good at it. Is it due to lack of effort, hustle, or smarts? No. It is a limitation thing. He's too small. Has no reach. He can't cover enough space, and is going up against top players. Then you have Deboer matching him up against top lines like he did against Malkin or Stamkos and St Louis or the Sedins. It is mind blowing, and he was dominated every time. He is not even close to a player that can be matched up against other top lines.

Then tonight, you put Gionta in a situation that is absolutely foreign to him against a top 5 team in the league: 4-on-4. How much 4-on-4 hockey has Gionta even played in the NHL? Well it sure seemed like he had no clue what he was doing because he joined Zubrus on a forecheck going after a player that had had 8-10 feet to get the puck past them and create a ton of space down to work an odd man rush down the ice. Role with Jagr, Elias, Zajac, Zubrus, Henrique and Ryder. You don't need anyone else.

So again, I don't want to hate Gionta. I don't think he is an NHL player really. I think there are 5-6 players on every AHL team that could easily replace him, but him being in the NHL doesn't bug me so much. It really comes down to Deboer having a man crush on him and not helping the team eith his coaching decisions with Gionta. Like the effort. Like the hustle. Love these kind of stories, so cheer all you want. But for the last 45-50 games, Gionta has been one of the worst NHL players in the league. Advanced stats. Old school stats. They all tell the story.

If you want to blame Pete for anything, blame him for not calling a timeout when the old man line was gassed in the second period after Gelinas's icing.  That was a glaring screw-up by Pete.  But Gionta didn't cause Gelinas to get abused by Palmeri or Merrill to tip the puck past Cory in the OT.

He didn't help the defensemen back there with his decision, but Gelinas did have a brutal night. It's going to happen. He has shown so much, but has a lot to work on. I'm more concerned about Zidlicky's awful awful play, though.

I mean, c'mon.  Gionta has played enough hockey to know what to do at 4 on 4.  He played 4 on 4 OT last year all the time, sadly.  Should he be out there?  No, but again, Loktionov didn't play well tonight at all and Gionta's line played better and he got the reward.

Gio is on their cause he's smart and does stuff thay the TEAM and coach sees and likes. Stuff that won't show on a stat sheet. That's why he gets their. I agree he should only be on a fourth line. But he isnt losing games for us so relax

Fire DeBoer it's that simple. Then the Gionta and Janssen discussion goes away. Then the discussion of putting the best player on the ice to win a certain game goes away. Then the discussion of when to play Brodeur vs Schneider goes away. It's just that simple fire DeBoer.

Lol at the 4th liner hate after every loss. Yeah the 4th liners are really holding us back. Oh wait what did anaheims 4th line do tonight? That's right nothing because ours was better.

People need to stop blaming every loss on the freaking 4th line and gionta. He was out in OT because of his speed and most other guys were gassed on the first of a back to back. It's not like he was on the first ot shift.

And people getting on gelinas' case for a bad game yes he wasn't very good but look no further than zidlicky to see an even worse game but no nobody mentions him. And surprise surprise our power play goal was with Greene leading the rush.

devils were flying around in that game, but the late game speed of the ducks showed,  happy with a point, that was a great carry-in on the PP to set up greenie. gelly gets caught flat footed more lately , but in his defense, he was long enough to force the puck carrier behind the net. that wasnt an easy wrap.  waiting on word about brunner more than santa right now. hate to speculate but that screamed ACL

for most of that game it was the 4th line having no problems with the breakouts.  ryders line not so much, there was one shift where they never got out

exactly, when our 4th line is matched up against a lot of other teams 4ths, we're coming out ahead a lot of the time. It's when they are playing against top lines that they get hemmed in their zone.

And only 3 skaters (for both teams) tonight played fewer minutes than gionta (not including Brunner) but somehow he's the one getting the most heat here. It's laughable.

I don't think Zidlicky was good, but Gelinas was directly responsible via error for 2 of the goals.  His flubbed pass caused the Ducks to get an easy zone entry on goal #2, and he was unable to stop Palmieri from going wide.  Zidlicky managed to not take a penalty which is an immediate plus in my book.

I have to rant.

No, it's not about the game. First time I've been to a Devils home game in two years because of college, and while it wasn't what I wanted I had a blast.

IF YOU ARE A CASUAL FAN, and I mean someone who knows what "the devils" are and knows what a "hockey puck" is, and not much else, SHUT THE HELL UP AT THE GAMES.

I sat next to a woman. She was mid-twenties, reeked of booze and cigs, talked with a thick Long Island accent. Regardless, she wasn't too terrible in the beginning. Polite, at least. But, as soon as the puck dropped, until the end of the game, she used one. fvcking. word.

"Dangle"

Incorrectly, correctly, awkwardly... didn't matter. "Why didn't you dangle him, Henrique (hen-ree-kay)", "ugh Marty would have dangled that puck better than Chris Schneider", "DANGLE IT MEN, COME ON, DANGLE IT!". "That wasn't a foul, he was just dangling him". "DANGLE IT!" "Why is this so hard to score, just dangle more."

It wouldn't be so cringe-worthy if she did it every ten minutes. Every period. Something like that. No, though, it was literally every single play. She would bounce back and forth between yelling her favorite hockey phrase and explaining to her friend what she meant. "If he dangled that puck, we wouldn't have had an offsides foul, and probably would have scored". The worst, by far, was when she said "there's always the fourth quarter".

If you're learning the game, that's awesome. It's an awesome game, it really is. But for christ's sakes, do it quietly. Ask questions. Don't say the fvcking word dangle.

I'm annoyed of this Bitch just hearing about her
