Matteau and Santini with two (of the many) costly penalties for USA.

Santini's penalty was legit, a fluke but legit. Matteau's penalty was a joke and was the first of many calls and non-calls to go against the US. Russians got rewarded for diving and getting away with hits and were awarded the game. It's a shame since Santini was having a solid tournament and Matteau was playing one of his best games with a goal and an assist.

As maddening as NHL officiating can be at times, it is light years better than IIHF officiating. One reason I hate international hockey. I love the WJC but I'm not even going to bother watching the rest of it now.

Did anyone see the incident after Russia scored its final goal versus the USA today? The goal scorer skated right past the USA bench, gesturing to the whole team and rubbing it in. As he was skating past the last guy on the USA bench, the USA player -- I don't know his name but read that he's a Blackhawks draft pick -- gave the Russian player a stick to the face, leading to a few choice words between the benches.

Worst part was the Russian assistant (wasn't a coach I think) doing the BJ-move at the US bench.

Apparently Russia has a history of bad sportsmanship in this event.

Clarkson is not going to be happy about the Swedish coach just disrespecting that water bottle like he did.

The officiating is definitely different in the WJC games than what we're used to seeing.  It appears to me that there are a lot of scenarios where the philosophy that we're accustomed to seeing is, "Yes, that's technically illegal, but we won't call a penalty in that situation," (a mad scramble in front for example) whereas those things are being called by the international officials.

Good for Finland. I like to see some other teams win international tournaments. It gets tiring with the same rotation of Russia Canada and the US (and Sweden to an extent)

well yes not in the past two or three years as much but let's be honest if we go back over the past 25 years I'm sure about 95% of international tourneys we're won by the countries I listed, maybe throw in the Czechs as well.

Not to be a jerk, but the US doesn't belong in that conversation just yet. A World Cup when Clinton was in office and three WJC titles in the past two decades? Finns, Czechs, Swedes have better records than that.

Mind you it will change, but looking at the past 10-20 years of international competition...nope.
