Man, I don't know how old most of you are, or when you started watching the Devils, but Marty deserves much more from this fan base. Maybe Marty is done, but he has earned better than what I'm reading. How quickly we forget what he has meant to this team, how he gave a significant hometown discount at the dismay of the NHLPA, so that he could stay in Jersey. Sometimes I read this stuff, and it sounds just like the Rags' board. Really sad.

I've defended Marty on these boards a lot, but lately, he's not only played badly, he's put his foot in his mouth, being a questionable teammate. For a lesser player, some of the sh!t he's said to the media would be unforgivable (even if Chere's trolling for a quote). It's legit to call Marty on some of his sh!t, history or not.

You don't turn this around in a couple shifts. Its going to take a little time, but I know the guys will come back. Because I can see it. -- Jacques Lemaire

Correct one that has grown old and has lost some of his skills and therefore doesn't have the talent to be a number 1 anywhere. He wants to play more and hopefully that is not happening with the Devils. He is a distraction, he will continue to be a distraction and he would be a distraction where ever he goes. So it is time to retire.

In all fairness, Marty didn't say that, it's not in quotes.  That was Chere's comment.

I know that, that's what I meant.

THE NHL MUST LOVE THE DEVILS - from who else? A RANGER fan!
[Mark Messier]: A big, bald attention whore with a stupid Easter Island-lookin face. - from who else? DaneykoIsGod!

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?
- Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.

Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

jerseysteve, first off, most of the comments are not really mean-spirited.

Most people have not forgotten what he has meant to the team all of these years.  People have pointed out the many good things he has done (often signing for less than maket value, helping to make Lou's job much easier by not fighting for every last cent or testing UFA, etc.)  He has had an awesome career and will go down as one of the best ever to play his position.

Tri tends to lump all of the last four years together as "below average", but I've never agreed with that stance, because Marty had extended stretches of terrific play in both 2010-11 and 2011-12...I consider those seasons inconsistent (but clearly a sign of things to come, as far as the slow starts go).  But there's not much anyone can do to polish up last season and this one.  They've both been largely bad...in all honesty, I think if Roy or Hasek had turned in a season similar to last year's at Marty's age, they would've retired.  Marty just strikes me as the kind of guy who will always think he has something left until he REALLY doesn't have something left.

I think most of us have always hoped that it would never get ugly or embarrassing for him, but it has.  He was not the only one to blame for Sunday's loss, but that still didn't make any less hard to watch.  Some will say that it would've been better if he retired after the 2012 Cup run, but that's all hindsight...the guy had been terrific for 50 games...who could blame either Lou or Marty for thinking that he had something left?
