Harvey's injury basically set back everything. That was a huge blow to the team's 2014 chances before the offseason even began. Hell, I remember saying at the time of the injury during last season that 2014 was probably shot. They still could've made better moves this offseason to make .500 more plausible, kind of like how 2005 was a stepping stone year to 2006. But they decided to ignore most of the holes, keep all the crappy incumbents (see CR's #7 above), and give out highly suspect deals to aging players. I'm not as down on the Colon deal as CR is despite the age and likely regression but the Granderson deal could be a disaster if he falls off a cliff like Steamer thinks he will (.216/.307/.400).

Ahh 2013 redux makes sense.  So basically hope for some growth, and no injuries.

Depends on who gets hurt.  It sounds mean, but a guy like EY going down would actually be a good thing for the Mets, because that's the only way TC doesn't make the continual mistake of playing him.

Re:  2013 redux, the Mets are lucky that their fans are kind of in a semi-defeated "of course we didn't do much" mode.  Yankee fans would be burning their stadium down if they had an off-season like what the Mets just turned in.  The "big gets" were two outfielders that are question marks (one of whom is very pricey) and a fat soon-to-be 41-year-old starting pitcher.  The SS that apparently none of the Mets' higher-ups can stand is still here, Doofus and Davis are still here, and the "leadoff" hitter who was absolutely atrocious at the plate the final two months of 2013 is still here.  Oh, and the bullpen, which has been a trainwreck since Sandy became GM, is still a trainwreck.  His offseason was pretty bad.

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime?

It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

nmig, re:  Colon, it's hard not to be worried about a guy who's in the kind of shape he's in.  I would've liked the deal a lot more if it was just for one season, but if he crashes and burns (and that can't be ruled out, not at his age and weight), the Mets are going to have $10 million in dead money in 2015, when they're going to need every penny of it.

Not to put it so bluntly, but Colon has been a fat ass for awhile now. Hasn't stopped him from being good. I worry more about age-related decline/injuries than I do his weight.

Two years for him for a team in the Mets' position might not have been the greatest idea, but I have a feeling Sandy will be shopping him hard come July if he's pitching decently and the young arms are knocking on the door.

I think he's been fat for his entire career, but you worry about a guy like that as he gets older...can't help but wonder when that starts to take a toll.

We're basically in agreement...best-case scenario is that he's only here through July or August, pitches well while he's here, and Sandy is able to move him.  But even in that case, that extra year really hurts...he could've been a perfect rental for someone.  That second year hurts his value, and chances are whatever team would trade for him will want the Mets to eat some of the 2015 money.

Will be so interesting to see which arms get dealt in the near future.  If Gee is having a career year, does Sandy move him at the deadline while they can sell high?

Apropos of nothing but Justin Turner is the starting 2B for the Dodgers for their Opening Night game vs Arizona (they play a two game set in Australia this weekend).

heh. He should be our starting SS.

Though really Drew should be. Now we're talking about trading an asset for Gregorious. Just open your damn wallet and save the asset.

Parnell threw 2 innings vs minor league hitters today. He topped out at 94 mph per Marc Carig. Still a ways to go -- Parnell averaged 95.7 mph on his fastball last season -- but that's encouraging news.

Glad to hear that, re:  Parnell.  One of those guys that you wonder if Sandy would entertain moving at the deadline.

Sounds like the Drew saga may come to an end very soon:

Veteran free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew is willing to sign a one-year contract with the Tigers, a person familiar with Drew’s thinking said today.

Jose Iglesias is supposedly going to miss most, if not all, of the season with broken shins, so this makes a lot of sense. In some ways this doesn't bother me so much, because I rather trade for Franklin or Gregorius.

In bold:  that's where I am now.  I get the feeling Tejada is the Opening Day SS though.  I don't see Sandy being aggressive here.

Is Sandy *ever* aggressive, outside of when it's seemingly totally unnecessary (see: Granderson, Curtis and Colon, Bartolo).

But yeah, not getting my hopes with a trade. Just watch the Marlins poach one of them for Jacob freakin' Turner.

I'm not sure if I totally buy this, I mean yes the mets are obviously using Harvey as an excuse to delay putting a playoff caliber team together, but when Anderson first came in here, Harvey was not expected to be as good as he was as quick as he was, he was sort of found money in a sense late in the 2012 season. If alderson was counting on Harvey being the ace of the 2014 team from the day he walked in his office then I sincerely doubt his ability as a gm.

Apparently there was a regular season major league baseball game played today. For some idiotic reason they had an opening day in Australia, 10 days before real opening day. Dodgers 3-1 over Arizona.

Yeah and they play one more tonight at 10pm ET (which is technically Sunday, 1pm in Australia). I'm not a fan of it either.

This is largely true.  Harvey was not projected to be an ace, though his 2012 call-up raised expectations a little bit.

In an alternate universe where Harvey never gets hurt, I don't think Sandy would've done much more than he did this offseason...the Mets were never going to be in on the big FAs.  nmig said it perfectly...Sandy seems to pick the oddest targets to suddenly show a pulse with (Frank Francisco, Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon).

I am about as down as Sandy as I can get, but come 2015, he's all out of excuses.  We'll see if he's capable of doing what needs to be done and showing actual creativity and aggression.
