Depth move.  Maybe he and Elias can find something together.  Low risk, high reward deal.

The Devils continued to add depth up front by signing right wing Martin Havlat to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. Havlat, 33, had 12 goals and 10 assists in 48 games with San Jose last season. He was due to make $6 million in 2014-15 before the Sharks bought him out over the weekend, making him an unrestricted free agents. Havlat is good friends with longtime Devil Patrik Elias (and they have the same agent). Elias was happy to hear his good buddy would be joining him in New Jersey. “Hope he can be the player that he was and I believe I can help him do that,” Elias said via text. -

"Quite frankly, all the players are getting paid too much and all the contracts are too long," general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "But if you want to compete in this market and you want to win, there are some things you have to do."

Havlat is 33 and we have him on a one year deal. He's young enough where he can still turn it around and if he doesn't he's not stuck to us.

Like the move

Low risk with high upside

Maybe he will be revitalized here with the other Czechs, and on a team looking for redemption from a sh!tshow of a season...

No risk deal, why not.

Guy's fragile though.  Beyond fragile, really.  I'd be surprised if he plays 60 games.

Hasn't played close to a full season since 2010-2011. But for $1.5 million, ok, he fills a jersey.

He jumps over the boards and he's hurt. I think he'll go the same route as (I've already forgot his name) the guy that Lou let go to play in his home country.  One thing I like about PDB he will hold you accountable. If you suck, you sit! He'll give you just enough rope to hang yourself.  You have to "earn" playing time. you're not entitled. Havlat will be on short leash.

When he sees how hard the old man works (Jagr) he'll be motivated

I mean, I liked Havlat 3 years ago, but I think he's through.  $1.5 is about as low risk as you can get but I wouldn't be surprised if he's not here come December.

To be fair: Havlat caught his skate on the partition. It wasn't like he jumped over and landed and hurt himself.

In spite of that I'm pretty sure we'll hear "Havlat out with lower body injury" a few times.

alright so then we have about 3,550,000 (minus whatever Clemmenson is making) left...  which is still barely enough to sign a Vrbata, so who knows

barring any trade though, we're probably almost done

If you want to bring a Vrbata on board you could go the bonus route. However, if we do bring another forward on then someone will be moved.

The longer Vrbata remains available, the more I think he's waiting for Lou to work his magical magic to move someone to fit him. If we get him great, if not, I'm pretty alright with today's results.

"Certainly Martin is a player we've known for a long time. Our scouting staff scouted him when he was just a teenager. We've seen him in Ottawa in the playoffs and we've watched him play with Patrik in many International tournaments. So without question did we feel comfortable bringing in this individual and certainly know the kind of player he can be."

"The Stanley Cup has fallen from the Stars. The new millennium has its first Stanley Cup Champion, and it's the New Jersey Devils." Mike Miller calling the Devils winning the Stanley Cup.

"It goes to the captain and then there are handoffs during a skate around the ice" Mike Emrick as Scott Stevens is being presented the Stanley Cup.
