Just noticed that and was just about to ask. One possibility is that somebody gave a link to this site at a website with very heavy traffic.
The number seems to be dwindling down(245-132 users in the last 5 minutes) so it looks pretty legit that the site DID get hit with a lot of users...
What they were looking for I don't know

It wasn't me, I actually wasn't on the computer that early for a change!
Maybe it was a rogue segment of the player's union trying to get information about the other side, and are tired of the "filtered" news from the union.

Part of the reason of the upgrade was because of this damn bug. What is going on is the search engines send a bot to my site, but for some reason the board keeps viewing them as visitors. This is bad when Google or MSN launch their daily bot assault of 2-400 creepers on here.

That makes sense DM. I knew the search engines send out bots to find webpages but I never would imagine that they would send 500 of them to the same page at once.

It's supposed to be a hard coded feature that they are not counted on the user total. I took of their invisiblility cloak so when the number is spiking again you guys can tell me.

Yup, I had them hidden until just now. They are here all day and night usually. But until recently it wasn't counting towards users online. I think the upgrade (previous one) must have screwed something up.

Bots are crazy... one time I needed to send a paper to myself, but my e-mail wasn't working, so I posted it on my webspace. Lo and behold, what happens but that I forget to take it down. So when you searched for my name on Google, what was the first thing to come up? My final paper, ten pages, in full, one that earned me an A in the course and I could likely sell for a cool $100, but without anything standing in the way of someone downloading it and submitting it as their own. Lucky for me, I got to it first - if my school saw it, I could have had some serious hardball questioning...

I get plenty of bots to my site, but my search engine ranking sucks on most search engines. I think Google likes my site, but that's about it.
EDIT: I take that back, MSN likes my site, google I'm no where to be found (yet listed first on the fan page directory).

Google used to be good, but now somehow there are a TON of sites that are selling a devils item that somehow manage to get better search position than a number of useful fan sites.I take that back, MSN likes my site, google I'm no where to be found (yet listed first on the fan page directory).

My numbers are a bit lower than that, but I don't let the bots into my forums (and a few other sections of my site)... MSN definitely kicked up big time, with the preparation & release of their updated search engine.. I'm thinking I should send Mr. Gates a bill for his bots bandwidth usage..MSN has hit me 70,000 times with bots

Yes it does! Someone else who shares my pain!
And you are correct, I read something the other day about how MSN has quadroupled the bots they use to crawl the net to catch up with google. I don't think they crawl video files so my bandwidth hasn't taken a turn for the worse.

I used to get a lot of referrals from google but now you two (devilsrule and devilsinfo) easily outnumber google. I would figure between the three of us we account for 40% of the Devils fans traffic, makes no sense for other sites to come up.
