Canadiens assign Czerkawski to Hamilton Bulldogs
The Associated Press
12/28/02 12:31 PM
MONTREAL (AP) -- The Montreal Canadiens assigned winger Mariusz Czerkawski to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League on Saturday.
Czerkawski, who requested a trade earlier this month, was a healthy scratch in the Canadiens' game against Ottawa on Friday night.
Czerkawski has two goals, eight assists, and 14 penalty minutes in 25 games this season.

An offensive-minded winger, Czerkawski was drafted by the Boston Bruins with their fifth pick (106th overall) in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He debuted with Boston on April 9, 1994. The next season, Czerkawski played 47 games with Boston, contributing 26 points. The Bruins traded Czerkawski to the Edmonton Oilers in 1996, and 47 days later, Czerkawski made Boston pay. He beat Bill Ranford -- the goaltender for whom he was traded -- in overtime Feb. 27, 1996. Another trade landed Czerkawski with the New York Islanders in 1997, and he quickly became one of their top offensive threats, posting 70 points on 35 goals and 35 assists in 1999-00. Czerkawski tallied 30 goals again in 2000-01. The Islanders dealt him to the Montreal Canadiens after the 2001-02 season.
We may be able to steal him away at this point. It may not be such a bad idea. Any thoughts?

Taking him and his salary would be a mistake imho. Hes a floater, and has proved that in montreal. He just seems as worthless as Danton at this point.
"Jay Pandolfo's last game at Boston University was against the Wolverines," Madden said. "My job was to cover his line. Jay had scored something like 30 goals in 30 games that season. And that was his 31st game. Guess what happened?"
"We always joke about it now," Madden said. "Jay tells me: 'You shut me down that game and you've been shutting me down ever since. The only problem is, now you're playing with me. ' "

I don't entirely agree with you. He has put up good numbers in his career. A return trip to the metro area may be beneficial for him. With the exception of Danton, players that are aquired by New Jersey accept the Devils philosophy readily. But, on the other hand his contract is too much. I just have a feeling he and Elias could burn out a few red bulbs.

I wouldn't even trade Bicek for Czerkawski at this point.

I'm pretty sure Czerkawski wouldn't work here. He only has good numbers because he's played on bad teams.

Mariusz Czerkawski is not an exceptionally skilled player. He's somewhat big, but does not use his size. A good stick handler, has a good shot.. but he's lazy.
He was a -8 on a playoff team, after his position was taken by Mark Parrish. The Islanders practically waived him after that. He's been waived twice in his career.
His numbers are the result of the Islanders team. Go look at the Islanders those years, they have NO ONE.. he was their best option on offense.
I've made the argument against Czerkawski so many times that I've lost any sense or eloquence when discussing him. He is not the option for this team.. he's a B grade scorer who really would not aid the team.

I knew this would get some of you hot under the collar. It's good to get the blood boiling. It shows that you are alive.

Ah, it's our daily dose of "what third-liner should we add to the Devils"
I think this underachiever's rep precedes him.

There is no need for this guy on the team. Already got a "change of scenery" player that isn't working out so far can't have another one.

I'm constantly amazed by the people Friesen is compared to.
Comparisons to problem children are not valid.
He's an under-achiever. A more proper comparison might be Arnott. But not runts, never-was-es and no-talents, please.
Dude's got talent. What he doesn't have is the innate drive we see in so many of our players that really gets us going. It's tough. We're used to Madden's fire... Stevens' fire... Elias' fire... Brylin's drive... so when you see a Friesen, you can't make heads or tails of it.
But I do think the guy 1. likes it here, 2. really thinks he is working and 3. IS trying.
I'm with RD.
