Magic numbers are figured out by the max # of wins (or in hockey's case points) of the chasing team vs the number of points(wins) of the leading team(s). Hockey also has the case of getting a point for a tie. If two teams end up in a tie the first tiebreaker is which team has more wins. In this case both the Bruins and Islanders have more wins right now on Saturday March 22, 2003. Since the maximum # of points the Rangers can get right now(It's Saturday morning as I type this.) is 86 and both the Islanders and the Bruins have 78 points, the magic or anti- magic # for the Rangers is 8. The Rangers would also have to win 3 games more than both the Islanders and Bruins down the stretch to knock it into the 2nd tie breaker of head to head competition. Of course if the Rangers get more points than one of these teams this whole post is rendered moot.Actually Rock, it is 9. The Rangers can reach 86 points if they run the table.
The Isles and Boston need 9 to eliminate them.

Ftorek fired, Boston loses again, the Rags really have hope.
The Bruins with a BIG win over Toronto, 3-2. You gotta figure that game disappointed a bunch of Ranger faithful.

For this to get interesting, the Rangers have to win their next 4 no question and at most have the Islanders go 2-2. I'd like to see that. Like me, many of you will be at MSG for the Ranger / Devil game. Its been a long while since we've really see those teams play with something on the line...even if it is only one of the teams.

Is the first tiebreaker wins or head-to-head? If tied both teams will most likely be tied with wins, however the Rangers will have taken the head-to-head matchup.

2) Wins
3) Head-to-Head (throwing out 1st game played, if odd # of games)
4) Goal differential (for 82 game season - not head to head)
5) Lower payroll (oops, rangers lose this one !)

As much as I want the Devs to be the ones to close them out I'd laugh my a$$ off at the irony if a liquidated team was the one to provide the death blow to the $100 million team.
The New Jersey Devils win Stanley Cups everywhere:
-NHL record for most road wins in the playoffs - 10-1 in '95 and 10-2 in '00
-NHL record for most home wins in the playoffs - 12-1 in '03

Game over. Season over. And to think Mario didn't suit up.
The Pens don't need him.

The only players who showed up tonight are the fourth line, Leetch, Blackburn and Kovalev.
I hope they get rid of that pylon Poti. He sucks.

"The Stanley Cup has fallen from the Stars. The new millennium has its first Stanley Cup Champion, and it's the New Jersey Devils." Mike Miller calling the Devils winning the Stanley Cup.
"It goes to the captain and then there are handoffs during a skate around the ice" Mike Emrick as Scott Stevens is being presented the Stanley Cup.

I've been to games the past few years and have taken part in that chant.
So, it was pretty easy to tell
Well, it's a good thing I wrote them off after the Devil loss.
