you really think Garth Snow is making the trades?
you said so you yourself. A 1st = 2nd this year. Robert Nilsson is 22 and while he's scored at Bridgeport, he hasn't done anything at the NHL level yet. Omarra is not that highly touted. Smyth is still in his prime.
I wouldn't have done it, but this trade is not as lopsided as you think.
Smyth is on pace for 40 goals in 69 games this year. The isles are getting a proven goal scorer here.
Huh? You only get 20 games of Ryan Smyth. While a 1st isn't *that* valuable, the Islanders are in the middle of the 1st round where it is slightly more so. Robert Nilsson has struggled to make the NHL - fine. But you just can't deal all three of these assets for 20-30 games of Ryan Smyth, who while he is a top 10 LW in the league, has to get acquainted with his teammates right away. Unless the Islanders re-sign Smyth - it's senseless.
Oh, and the Islanders still need a defense.

The Isles D isn't bad, and Dipietro has been great. They'll be getting Martinek and Gervais back. The D looks patchwork, but they haven't played that way.
Obviously after a trade like this, you assume they're going to re sign him.

Look out - everyone's bracing themselves for the return of Martinek and Gervais.
Meanwhile when the Devils get Jason Wiemer and Alex Brooks back, the league's in trouble.

I think Oilers fans are starting to get tired of hearing about 'what if's"
Smyth was the face of the franchise and they $hould pony up the $ for him.

Don't worry Smyth will be back in Edmonton after July 1st. He does not want to be an Islander.

Smyth was the face of the franchise and he was insulted. He is not going back to Edmonton.

"The Stanley Cup has fallen from the Stars. The new millennium has its first Stanley Cup Champion, and it's the New Jersey Devils." Mike Miller calling the Devils winning the Stanley Cup.
"It goes to the captain and then there are handoffs during a skate around the ice" Mike Emrick as Scott Stevens is being presented the Stanley Cup.

Smyth has a lot of mileage on him, and while it's a tough thing to cut him loose, they got a solid deal for #94.

I think this is a great deal for the Isles.

Smyth going back to Edmonton is crazy talk. He didn't want to get traded. The Oilers slapped him in the face. They gave new deals to Hemsky, Roloson and Horcoff this off season and not Smyth.

BINGO.

I don't think they got that much. The prospects they got will not turn into anything special at all and 1st round draft picks this year have barely any value at all.
I think this is a great deal for the Isles.
A 1st round pick from the Islanders has more value than the ones being thrown around by most other clubs. Nilsson has solid skills - whether he can put it all together remains to be seen. O'Marra hasn't been terrific in the OHL, but who knows.
It's more of an indictment of the subpar drafting of Mike Milbury than anything else.
It's hardly a 'great deal' for the Islanders - they gave up their best prospects for 20-30 games of a solid LW. Their chances for winning a Stanley Cup or contending are small. It may be a bad deal for both teams - but I doubt it.
And to the sucker who signs Ryan Smyth to that 5 year deal this off-season - good luck.

The New Jersey Devils win Stanley Cups everywhere:
-NHL record for most road wins in the playoffs - 10-1 in '95 and 10-2 in '00
-NHL record for most home wins in the playoffs - 12-1 in '03
