I can't fault Cashman for not picking up Gagne. Apparently Texas wanted Melky and Kennedy, so I think that was a good non move. I am still upset that Farnsworth is still here, and to a lesser extent, Igawa. Hopefully Cairo is DFA'ed for Betemit, and Ramirez/Britton and Joba are called up and actually used correctly by Torre. The bullpen situation is looking pretty bleak though.

So the deadline has passed. Atlanta is the big winner picking up Texeira and rebuilding their bullpen with Dotel and Mayhay. The NL East should be interesting finish.
As for the Yankees, they are gambling a lot on young players/rookies. More than I am really comfortable with. You can make an argument that this was the best option but that doesn't make it a particularly good option. I like Betemit. Once Giambi comes back the Yankee bench should be quite good. I just don't trust Torre and the bullpen. He should let Gator be in charge of the bullpen.

The Rangers and the Met's were the obvious trade deadline winners this year.
The Mets by picking up Castillio, who is one of the best lead off batters in the league. He's quick, can steal bases easily, usually bat's around 300, and is a stud defensivly (set a record this year for most consecutive games by a second basemen without an error)
The Rangers improved by adding Salty and a few other prospects. First base men who put up 16 HR's in one of the best hitter's park's in the league (Teixeira) are easy to come by. Young, talented catchers, who can hit for average and power, are much harder to find.

Hate to break it to you but if Luis Castillo is near the top of the lineup, the Mets are making a mistake. The Mets did bat LoDuca there for a long time so maybe they haven't learned.
Furthermore, while picking up Saltamacchia is very good, their return for Gagne sucks.

I think you are overvaluing Castillo. He doesn't get on base enough to be that. And you are totally undervaluing Teixeira. He is a consistent 30+ HR 110+ RBI guy who gets on base and plays gold glove defense. Plus he is just coming into his prime. Looking at his career it is not like he struggles on the road. That was huge for Atlanta.
Atlanta is the big winner. In my mind they clinched a playoff spot today.
Boston is the other winner solidifying their bullpen.

You mean Gotay/Easley. Valentin's pretty much done for the year if not his career. I could have lived with that platoon but defense is important too (Castillo's already made a couple nice plays tonight) and Castillo does fill the #2 slot in the batting order which has pretty much been a merry-go-round all year. Plus they really gave up nothing to get him.
I would have liked another bat for the outfield though, Green's been a total black hole since April. And I like the guy, he's one of the few Mets that's busted his butt all year but he just ain't cutting it anymore as a starter.

This is probably true, but it's not Guidry's fault that Kyle Farnsworth has totally lost the ability to strike hitters out.
