Top pick Oden will likely miss season after knee surgery

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Greg Oden, the top pick in this year's NBA Draft, likely will miss his first season with the Portland Trail Blazers after surgery on his right knee Thursday.

Doctors found cartilage damage during an exploratory procedure, and team physician Dr. Don Roberts performed microfracture surgery to repair the damage.

"There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal," Roberts said in a statement. "All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery."

The 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Full recovery likely will take six to 12 months, the team said.

Oden was the top pick in the June draft out of Ohio State, where he averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds.

The Blazers have scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon to discuss Oden's situation.

that sucks, i was looking forward to seeing him tear it up. Early on people said he was injury prone but this is just bad

Microfracture surgery is hard to come back from. Being young is a double edged sword for Oden -- on the positive side, because he is young, he is more likely to rebound from the procedure and heal up quite nice, but on the negative side, it's really bad to have this type of procedure when you're young because synthetic cartilage does not last TOO long and may need to be repeated multiple times throughout the course of his career if he doesn't take care of himself.

I had microfracture surgery on my knee about two years ago, it's a bitch to recover from. You can't put ANY weight on the leg for two months because you run a high risk of damaging the microfractures drilled in the knee. Rehab wasn't too bad, but it was relatively painful. He needs to take his time in recovery -- you can't rush something like this or you're looking at creating some really bad joint and arthritic problems later down the road.
