...but dynasty mode is just down right awful and needs another overhaul with people who not only watch hockey but will bother testing.

Dynasty mode is attrocious in '08.

Your unconditional rejection of violence makes you smugly think of yourselves as noble, as enlightened, but in reality it is nothing less than abject moral capitulation to evil. Unconditional rejection of self-defense, because you think its a supposed surrender to violence, leaves you no resort but begging for mercy or offering appeasement.

Maybe the cover jinx of players getting injured and being on the front cover of these games will end this coming season.

Still... awesome that Phaneuf is the cover athelete.

Rather have Elisha.

Anyone remember NHL Hitz 20-02? Stevens on the cover, ridiculous stats... man, I was a God at that game. Then the next one came out and had so many damn glitches but rather than fix them all, they ended the series. Haven't owned an NHL game since. Probably won't again cause no one seems interested in bringing one to the Wii.

Now I want to play Hitz, though I need to find it. That'll take days. Ugh.

One handed dekes? I hope this franchise isn't turning back to arcadey-like hockey like NHL 99-NHL 2003 were..

I know people use one-handed dekes.. but not too often.. i just hope it isn't overdone.. stay sim EA! dont go back to arcade hockey

I am glad there is a new system for playing defense in 09 though. It was difficult to poke check the puck from AI and not have them take it right back. Now I can just block passes.

Be a Pro mode sounds great, but not at the cost of them forgetting to update dynasty mode. I hated (loved) how after my second season, patrick kane, phil kessel, and jonathan toews all became UFAs at like age 20. How did that happen? (I signed them).

I gave up on poke checks in NHL 08.. it seemed like 75% of the poke checks you did ended up tripping the opposing player and you got a penalty.. WHERES THE DIVING CALL?? :P

But seriously just for more realism - EA should add the 'clear over the glass' penalty and a diving penalty.. also maybe a video goal review, i dont understand why thats not in the game.. I think the only hockey game that had video review was like NHL Faceoff 2003

All I know is, the EA franchise has gone down-hill in my mind. I'm one of those gamers who is really into the whole GM aspect of a sports game as much, if not more than the actual gameplay. Here are my thoughts...

- Dynasty mode: The same every year. I think EA should check out nhlnumbers.com and actually apply accurate contracts to each player. That would be cool. Also glad they give you the option to turn off CPU trades, because some trades I saw were just ridiculously unrealistic in dynasty mode...

- Be A Pro: Sounds like a good idea, but I hope it has depth. FIFA's Be A Pro gives you only one season to play so it took all the fun out of playing as Jozy Altidore. It would be cool for the Be A Pro mode to have features such as "meet with the coach" to discuss playing time or request linemates, or even if the game allowed you to negotiate contracts or let you choose how to respond to the press. Yet, seeing as how this is an NHL game, not Madden, I don't see it happening anytime soon...

- Gameplay: Has been far too similar to the year before in every way. Skill stick was a decent addition, but I really like the new defense-stick, dump-and-chase feature and how we can finally separate offensive from defensive line changes. Also, create-a-play seems like a great idea, because I always wondered what Johnny Mac was drawing during a last-minute timeout. As far as checking and fighting go, I just read that there are 300 different animations... wow. Maybe there's a button I can hit while locked up with another fighter that tells the refs to back off... that would be awesome! If not, that could be considered as animation #301 for NHL 2010.

- Conclusion: I might actually enjoy the EA NHL series again, but I've said that about some of the past NHL games and really have been let down. Maybe it's because EA seems to always give gamers the best features on their Madden games (that I have really gotten tired of), and I seriously thought for awhile that EA was giving the NHL the present-day ESPN treatment. NHL 09 could change that, but I'm definitely going to rent before I buy...

Ok, I got this post from a guy on a Maple Leafs messageboard. He claims it came from another board, from somebody inside EA.

Take it with a pinch of salt, but if half of the stuff this guy talks about is true, then this game will be amazing.

From a guy claiming to be an EA Sports honcho

Some info about the new "Be A Pro" feature

Be A Pro.
Okay, most of the NHL Gaming fans are asking themselves some questions about whether or not the new NHL version would include a superstar mode. The answer is no. However, EA Sports has made an even better feature called Be A Pro, which is more dynamic to the game. So what is the goal of Be A Pro? Well you choose or make your own player and you play with him on and off the ice. How do we play off the ice? You watch the game from the bench, with the bench camera, just like backup goaltenders do most of their time. It is the same thing if your take a penalty; you have to watch the game again!

What are the Feature of Be A Pro:

Create your virtual self: With the creation of last yearís create yourself, get drafted by a team to have a career and get rewarded if you play the game the way it should be played.

Personal Camera: Camera that follows you on the rink, bench, and penalty box where you donít want to be too much.

Feedback: You will receive feedback on the way you play the games, positive and negative side of your style of play. You get this from every shift, period and game.

Position: Your game style position is the key to succeed as a pro. So be careful where and how you play versus your opponent!

Get traded? Yes it is possible to get tradedÖ too bad if you were on a CUP contender team, you will have to work harder!

Cards of your Player: You will move to a new category of cards every time you have achieved a new level with your game style.

Your Goal: Be a hall of famer!! And it takes more then 1 season to accomplish

ONLINE PLAY. You'll like this.

Online Mode:
This year's online mode tops every other sports game out on the market! We now have the possibility to play 6 VS 6, and all the players can be controlled by someone. The producers put all their efforts into bringing this game to a new generation of online gaming experience! Last year's was great, but itís nothing compared to NHL 09. Also remember the full stat tracking implented in the online mode for 09. It's only going to get better

Online Team Play:
So I just mentioned the new ability to play 6 VS 6, but Iím happy to say that it doesnít stop there! Our leagues will now offer full statistics on players, whether they are yours or your opponents!

Create-A-Play Online?
If you guys were waiting to get the create-a-play online mode, I'm happy to say that this feature will be even better than last year since you can now create an offensive play and a defensive play; which will ultimately change everything!

PENALTIES AND LEAGUES, ETC.

Penalty calls:

The following list shows the calls you'll be getting if you play dirty:

Delay of Game: Goalie playing in trapezoid: 2 minutes
Delay of Game: If you play the puck over the glass: 2 minutes
Cross checking: If you high check from behind: 2 minutes
Tripping : if you trip your opponent with your stick: 2 minutes
High Sticking: If you high stick your opponent: 2 minutes
High Sticking: If you high stick your opponent and hurt him: 4 minutes
High Sticking: If you high stick your opponent and really hurt him: 5 minutes major
Fighting: If you fight: 5 minutes major

Show your talents to the world:
This year's innovation is the ability to save your latest play and load it online via EA Sports World. This is great guys! Last year we all went on YouTube to watch great goals scored by hockey fans in last year's game. Now it's possible to share it directly with your friends and get the chance to make it to the top 10 best goals on the web at EA Sports world. You can also take screenshots of your players and share them with your pals.

Statistics:
The new game offers a new stat tracker! If a player scores a goal, you'll see a message appear under him: 30th goal of the season. A lot of hockey gamers wanted this feature and we are thrilled to announce that it will be included in this new version. We'll also see the 3 stars of the game coming out, just like in real life! Things just keep getting more and more realistic!

Tune the game to your style:
People have wanted this feature for a long time. Now it's finally possible to import your songs into the game. Listening to your favorite tunes and playing at the same time makes a great combination. It doesnít stop here though; you can choose the music horn for each time you score a goal, when you are going on a power play, shorthanded and a whole lot more.

Leagues included in the game:
National Hockey League
American Hockey League
International Teams.
Russian Elite
German Elite
Swedish Tourney
Finnish Tourney
Czech Elite

PHYSICS, CONTROLS, OTHER MILD TWEAKS

Physics Engine:
NHL 09 uses the smartest physics engine on the video gaming market. That is the Euphoria is a game animation engine created by NaturalMotion based on Dynamic Motion Synthesis, NaturalMotion's proprietary technology for animating 3D characters on-the-fly "based on a full simulation of the 3D character, including body, muscles and motor nervous system". Instead of using predefined animations, the characters' actions and reactions are synthesized in real-time; they are different every time, even when replaying the same scene. While traditional physics engines uses ragdolls (like the Havok Physics Engine) for animations generated on the fly, Euphoria employs a more complex method to animate the entirety of physically-bound objects within the game environment. Euphoria runs on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms.

New Skill Stick:
With the New Skill Stick Legendary moments, you can show off your skills against the toughest opponents you will have to face. This year the new skill stick features one handed dekes as well to make the game more realistic. One of the greatest feature is the Punishing body check, which is a new system that looked great in development step of the game. EA Sports makes hockey that more exciting to play. Last but not least, the newest feature with the skill stick is the ďwatch out for your sticksĒ which, in other words, is stick lifting. This feature is great guys; you can lift your opponent's stick to get possession of the puck but if you miss, you get called for 2 minutes, 4 minutes and yes 5 minutes as well... but wait a second; did I say 4 minutes? Yes! It's now possible to get called in for 4 minutes for a High Stick! Do we see blood? Hmmm we all wish we did!

Collision System:
NHL 09 is coming out with its new collision system! It really makes the game feel like the real deal. If you are playing Chara and hit St-Louis, chances are high that St-Louis will fall down. If you are St-Louis, on the other hand wellÖ good luck with that. The new collision has more depth then it used to; if you're going full speed, you will give a solid hit as if you were standing still.

Create a Play:
This feature was introduced last year and made a huge and direct impact as the game's key feature. This time around the producers have implanted offensive and defensive plays to make it an even more realistic experience.

Fighting system:
The Fighting mode has changed in 09 version, although this is all we know so far since we didnít get the chance to play dirty enough. The producers did say that it was better, but it remains a Hockey game nonetheless. If you want to fight, go buy a Wrestling game! Circle your opponent, grab his jersey and settle a mid-game score.

Desperate Goaltenders:
Last year's innovation with the net minders was positive, although after a while we wanted to see more from them in different occasions. Now we'll see them move their heads to see the play when they are being screened. They will also make desperate saves when they aren't in position.

Game play:
Well the NHL 09 controls are pretty much the same as NHL 08, although they have implanted NHL í94 controls for the people who are starting to play console Hockey games. This is a great way to get more people into the game with ease. NHL 08 was not the easiest game to play if you arenít a big gamer. It was a genius idea on EA Sports' end to bring back these controls.

The Presentation:
Now I already said a lot of new features and this one came to us by surprise. When your team gets scored on, as the replay goes on you'll get feedback on the errors you just performed during the last play! This way, the computer won't be the only learning machine! You'll now get to watch and learn from all your mistakes!

Patrice Cormier on fighting: "I donít mind it at all. Backing up a teammate, Iíll be there any time. If itís a tough guy, it doesnít matter who it is. Iíll be there to defend my teammate. Itís not fighting just to fight, but if a teammate needs my help or the team needs a boost, Iíll be there. Iíll do anything for the team.Ē

Im hoping this means guys will group together and shove each other after a whistle, or in front of the goalie when he freezes the puck. That would be killer, and also have the option to throw down the gloves (pressing L1 and R1) that would be awesome.

I think gameplay wise the NHL series is on the rise, but the GM mode is piss. I really hate the Dynasty mode in 08. I wish it was the classic 10 Season mode that was in NHL 2002 for example. I can do the trades I want, not be assed with a Salary Cap, not be bothered with a horrible interface and such. The GM mode is horrible. For GMing I just play NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007. Now if that game was fused with the on ice gameplay of NHL 08 I would be stoked.

I actually JUST bought NHL Hitz 02 for 2 bucks used. Only problem was, it was Hitz 03 in the box. Oh well, two bucks, can't go wrong.

I traded in my original copy of Hitz 02 for 03 at Funcoland. It saved me $4. I would have been better off keeping the damn thing. I remedied that by taking my friend's game, though in my defense, he hated it cause it wasn't realistic. Just cause you can't actually throw people through the glass or light on fire in real hockey doesn't mean it isn't fun.

But I wouldn't be mad about getting 03, it's definitely a deeper game with a far better franchise mode. I just have a soft spot for the one with Stevens on the cover. Pronger's just not the same. And there's some serious slowdown and flickering when you have the team lit up, at least on the Cube version.

Oh, and thanks for the answer in the thread about the invoices.

I think taking out the salary cap would be a horrible idea, I doubt they are even considering that. It would make a huge difference in realism and would make the game a lot easier. I guess they could always just make it an option though.

I think if they combined EHM with NHL it would be too much to worry about. I'm happy with them as two separate games. I just wish they still made EHM.
