I think with D-10, since I assume they'll make one, the writers should try to purposefully lack the magic of D-9 and instead focus on making D-10 have magic of its own.

For me, you could probably make an interesting film about the going ons in D-10, the return of the aliens in the 3 years, the world's consternation on what to do during waiting those 3 years, or all of the above in some form. Really an alternate world was made in D-9 so there are tons of possibilities, IMO.

Maybe I missed it, but the only lingering question I have about D-9 is this: What were the aliens doing by Earth in the first place? It's like they just sorta ran out of gas and Earth was the closest, life sustainable planet they could go to. Why were they in our neighborhood?

They're obviously a race with advanced technological capabilities and have weapons that put ours to shame. The mere fact that they have such advanced weapons shows that they aren't an entirely peaceful race. Did they originally set out to attack Earth? Some other planet? If they weren't, will our inhumane treatment of the prawns spark a war upon Christopher's return?

The Matrix comparison is a really good one. Hopefully, if they do decide to make a D-10, they'll actually do it right instead of butchering the franchise the way Hollywood did with The Matrix.

Inglorious Bastards was awesome. Definitely my favourite movie of the year so far, and it's good to be satisfied after The Hangover and Star Trek let me down.

Christoph Waltz was outstanding as others have mentioned. I really enjoyed the long dialogue. The opening scene and the bar scene were great

I liked the first scene as well.

I loved in the opening scene that when they switched to English I assumed it was because the movie wanted to get rid of subtitles, and was going to make everything just be English from then on, but then it turned out there was a real reason and the movie went back to subtitles.

Damn...all this D-9 sequel talk, especially given DiG's spoiler tagged lingering question, is really getting me jacked for a potential D-10! My only caveat is great starts like this can ruined quickly. I reference it often but Blade 3 anybody?

Also, is there any way to indicate the movie you're referencing when doing the spoiler tags? I almost clicked on a Basterds spoiler by mistake!

Now, back to watching Trainspotting for 80,000th time...

Ya, they mentioned that the ship was full of "non-leaders" since they couldn't do anything other than follow orders really and that they thought all the chiefs might have been killed or lost in some way....or....what if all the chiefs came down in the pod the ship jettisoned(the one they needed to make the ship fly) and they've subtly ingrained themselves into the earth power structure in some way and seeing how the aliens are treated in D-10(or were treated in D-9) will make them start to assert their leadership and smarts in a more overt way.

I wasn't really looking foward to see D-9, but some friends who loved sci-fi Drag-me with them to watch.

At end they hated the movie, and I loved.

Just saw Inglourious Basterds for the second time and now I can safely say that it is without a doubt the best film of the year for me. Tarantino's World War II fairy tale might not be his masterpiece (although the last line in the movie might suggest otherwise), but it is great nonetheless. It has great characters (such as Aldo, Landa and Shosanna), some instantly classic scenes, and, most importantly, the best dialogue QT has written since Jackie Brown. The dialogue contains so much unspoken threats and tension, that the violence that follows it almost acts as comic relief. And speaking about comedy, the movie is quite hilarious. I really enjoyed every minute, from the great opening scene to the outrageous ending. Tarantino's back on top form!

Since I had absolutely nothing to do today I also saw G.I. Joe, which I normally wouldn't do as the trailer made it out to be a big dumb action movie. As it turns out, it was dumb in every aspect, but I was surprised that I somewhat enjoyed it.

Since I had absolutely nothing to do today I also saw G.I. Joe, which I normally wouldn't do as the trailer made it out to be a big dumb action movie. As it turns out, it was dumb in every aspect, but I was surprised that I somewhat enjoyed it.

I ended up at GI Joe because a friend wanted to see it. I knew from the previews I thought the effects looked awful, especially with that much money spent, and I thought they were awful when I saw the full movie. What was surprising to me is that the script isn't half bad. I can understand why movie execs would have read that script and thought to themselves they could make a big blockbuster out of it. Now of course there were the jokey side characters which were bad for the movie, and I'm going to guess added into the script later to make it kid friendly. Taking that same script and scaling it up for adults and actually spending less money on effects would have probably ended up with a really decent movie.

Oh ya, the "big twist" was so telegraphed that I would assume half the theater guessed the twist before the movie even hinted there would be one.

Basically says the director didn't have a sequel in mind at the time but now he already has some thoughts about it. Talks about answering if Wikus becomes human again. Says his ideas don't really revolve around if the aliens return or not. Also, the director and the guy who played Wikus find Wikus hilarious before his "redemption"(I do too) and they might like doing something showing more of his early life.

Not to post a "Me Too" or anything, but I have no problem with merging the Summer Movies and the regular Movies threads. I just created the other Movies thread so we can talk about movies outside the Summer season, but having it all in one place would be just fine with me.

The more I think about it, the more I think a prequel is the way to go for District-9. There is so much that I want to know about those first 20 years the prawns spent on the planet ... or, more specifically, the first year or so. How did they come to the decision to give them their own walled-in plot of land? Were there other ideas? How did they bring them back to health? How did they come to realize that the prawns can breathe our atmosphere? Eat and be sustained by our livestock? I'm not sure if the fact that prawns can breathe our air and eat our food is such a stretch that it borders on being a plot flaw, or if it's a fascinating coincidence, or if it's why they chose our planet to "crash" on?

Plus, I think it would be tough for a sequel to maintain the same kind of feel that D-9 had. There would be a temptation to follow Christopher's journey back to his home planet and turn it into more of an alien movie. The feel of D-9 wasn't that of a typical alien movie ... it felt more like it was about refugees and basic emotional interactions between different living beings. If they do make a prequel and it isn't the kind of abomination that the Matrix turned into (sorry CRASH), then I'd absolutely love to see them take a crack at D-10.

Most importantly, I think it's the mark of a great movie that it can spark such discussion. Most summer sci-fi flicks, you can just go to the theater and more or less turn your brain off for two hours while you let dazzling special effects tickle your eyes. But anything that actually generates critical thought without losing its continuity is a special film.

Basterds was among the best, D9 was great as well. Public Enemies lacked in several ways. Star Trek was overall very solid, Hangover was very funny. Funny People was a waste of time.

Who was ripping off Ricky Gervais, who created the show and character. Gervais was probably ripping off someone else he had seen do the buffoon act before too. It's tough to be totally original.

way that they shot the small ship down rather then let it go right to the mother ship and the way that after the first few minutes the prawns were totally seamless.

I saw elements of alien nation in it and it had a V feel to it.
