The verdict is in. After a much-publicized attempt at an NHL comeback, Theoren Fleury has been released by the Calgary Flames.
The team released a statement Friday afternoon confirming the decision.
"I believe Theoren did a great job and should be proud, especially considering all the factors including age, time away from the game and lifestyle change," said general manager Darryl Sutter in the statement. "This is not a hockey story; it's a life story. Our agreement with Theoren was that he had to be one of our top six wingers and there were never any intentions of assigning him to the American Hockey League."

"The Stanley Cup has fallen from the Stars. The new millennium has its first Stanley Cup Champion, and it's the New Jersey Devils." Mike Miller calling the Devils winning the Stanley Cup.
"It goes to the captain and then there are handoffs during a skate around the ice" Mike Emrick as Scott Stevens is being presented the Stanley Cup.

do you expect a sutter to know anything about PR? honestly.
No, but I am shocked by this move since Brent had such a hard-on for veterans last year like Shanny, Holik...etc and wouldn't give the kids any chances. I thought he'd be all over Theo, especially because he actually played extremely well.

The Sutters must have really thought he couldn't help, though, 'cause they need to win this year or they whole family may get the boot. Maybe Fleury doesn't want to play as a checker so the team and him decided the top 6 thing together?
we're bashing the sutters here, not defending them. didn't you get that memo?
fleury said with TSN he just wants to play, and since he's broke and 41 years old i believe him.

This is above Brent's head I would say, plus, do you really think Theo would reject any position. He would probably be the mascot for that team.

I'm not saying it's Brents call. I'm saying every Sutter there can't afford to have a bad season so I don't think they'd throw away someone they think could help. I didn't see Fluery play so I have no idea if they're correct.

(Selfishly, I'd love to see Albany sign him, but the Carolina organization doesn't roll like that.)
of the Devils' mascot, NJ Devil, and
of all mascots far and wide.IT IS VERY HARD TO WIN ONE STANLEY CUP, FORGET ABOUT THREE... and maybe it's high time some of you actually APPRECIATED THAT instead of treating it like it's some flipping birthright because for some random reason you rooted for the damn Devils!!!!!

Now, I knwo this sh!t bugs NJ4Life but ... it could be there was another problem that it would be inappropriate to reference in a press release - that's actually sort of what I feel like may be the deal. Someone caught Theo prematurely "celebrating" his return to the NHL or something.
I dont want to think the Sutters are that boneheaded they'd just dick a guy over.
I'm here for the party

Martin Brodeur gets win #552 3-17-09. I was there.
Doc Emrik's "they're josling in the corner", Elias' team record 365th assist, and Devils' 12th Dec 2008 8-5 win over the Rags. Clarkson's "Gordie Howe hat-trick" against the panthers on 2-28-09. The "A" Line. Marty's 100th career shutout. Zubrus's game winner over the Rags (09/22/09).

I think some AHL team will get him.
I think an NHL team will get him.
#3If Doc Emrick, who called yesterday's Bruins-Rangers on NBC, were a national network's lead baseball or football play-by-player, he would be widely known as among the finest in the history of television.
