"He has no ego," says Lou Lamoriello, general manager of the New Jersey Devils. "I don't think he has a selfish bone in his body. It gets infectious with people around him, but that's Joe. Having him here was something very special."

And the simple truth is this -- before and after Joe Nieuwendyk, this franchise has not been as good. Yes the same could be said for others, but Nieuwendyk's effect on his team, on his team's best players, on the fans and in the community can only be compared to, well, what Jarome Iginla is doing now in Calgary. Still.Wow. That just taints everything he's ever done, doesn't it. Because even if he never used a corked bat before, the doubt is there now. Unbelievable.
The man has hit over 500 home runs.
Sammy is a Hall of Famer.
Besides, tons of players use corked bats.
It's just a shame that Sammy got caught.

Think Palmeiro uses a corked bat?

Let's put it this way.Oh, I agree that he's a HOFer. But to me it's like steroid use. If you needed illegal help, it's not the same.
Think Palmeiro uses a corked bat?
If Raffy was using a corked bat, the SBT wouldn't think any less of him.
Why should Raffy not use a corked bat if everyone else is using one?

It's a shame.

They took away his RBI too.
Friggin' umps.

SBT, I'm surprised at your take on this. Why is this the umps' fault? Sammy was caught cheating. He knows the rules and he knows the consequences for breaking them.Friggin' bat busted as Sammy hit an RBI groundout.
They took away his RBI too.
Friggin' umps.
And why is cheating okay?

The man is a hero to millions of baseball-loving kids around the world.
About as good-natured a baseball player that you'll ever find.
The SBT doesn't condone cheating.
Unfortunately, tons of players cheat.
Most never get caught.
Why single out Sammy Sosa?

Absolutely.Yes but SBT, don't you think as a role model he should know better?
But Sammy is human.
He isn't perfect.
This is going to be very tough on his young fans.

The umps should have allowed the RBI because it came on a groundout.SBT, I'm surprised at your take on this. Why is this the umps' fault? Sammy was caught cheating. He knows the rules and he knows the consequences for breaking them.Friggin' bat busted as Sammy hit an RBI groundout.

Sammy could have gotten the RBI groundout with a regular bat.
So the cork itself didn't play a role in the at bat.
