Big move at deadline

Lou will ride the UFA wires to see who we can get cheap for depth, that is about it. We have great, young talent and strong veteran leadership which has fantastic chemistry developing. I dont see Lou ruining this strong base. We will get a cheap UFA for depth that's about it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a rental player to fill this spot. Don't know exactly who, though ...

there's not much out there. matt cullen, matt stajan, saku koivu, and eric belanger are the only UFA centers i'd have any interest in off non-playoff teams. but like you said, mcammond cannot have that spot in the playoffs.

I like Dean but he belongs on the third or fourth line.
When we are healthy I think Sharky is packed off back to Lowell to learn to shoot.

In the Devils-Wild GDT, par99 mentioned bringing a guy like Saku Koivu in. That could be a decent pickup, depending on the price...he's not having a great year, but he did put up 50 points in 65 GP last season. I'm not saying he's the slam-dunk, most ideal, we-got-this-guy-now-here-comes-a-Cup type, but he is an UFA after the season and probably wouldn't cost a whole lot. If Lou could pull off some of the nothing-for-something magic he's been known for, you could do worse. But I'd stand firm on what I'm willing to give up...if another team or two were to get involved and jack up the price, I'm out.
DevilinLA...if you're out there, what does Koivu have left?

Even when Marty comes back maybe Larry should put Clemmensen to be on the goal during the shootouts.
Can the coach do that ? Switch the goalies 5 seconds to go in overtime? - Most priceless quote ever posted on a message board.
Martin Brodeur: THE MOST ALL-TIME WINS!, 12 straight seasons of 30+ wins, 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophies, and zero respect from too many so-called Devils "fans" who are either too young or too bandwagon to remember the much darker days of Sean Burke, Craig Billington, Bob Sauve, Alain Chevrier, and the talented but overwhelmed Chico Resch, among many others.
It's easy to support a great player when he's playing at his very best. It takes a true fan to support that same player during those rare moments and stretches when he's not. Babe Ruth went 0-4 some games, and sometimes Wayne Gretzky was held pointless. There may be such a thing as greatness, but no such thing as absolute perfection every single night.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves or anything, but what do you think of Zharkov, Pelley and a pick for Koivu? I'm not really familiar with Anaheim's needs, just sorta loosely based this hypothetical on what it took to get Almo.

If Dean Mcammond is your second line centre you have problems come playoff time IMO.
I like Dean but he belongs on the third or fourth line.
When we are healthy I think Sharky is packed off back to Lowell to learn to shoot.
I also think it's good to point out that you can't say that that would be the second line. The Devils don't seem to use a line structure. The way I see things, the team has one first line and three second lines haha.

There is deffinatley a fourth line in there somewhere.

Eww... dumping Zharkov for an old rental makes me gag.

And McAmmond will be an excellent 4th line center/wing. I can see Lou bringing in Scotty N. Lou Certainly has a thing for reunions. I could definitely see Lou brining in Saku Koivu too. It is no secret we have an issue at center for the Elias line.
Our Playoff team will look something like:
Parise-Zajac-Langs
Elias-XXX-Bergfors
Rolston-Zubrus-Mcammond
Pando-Nieds-Clarkson (checking)
XXX=S Koivu would look good.
on D we have
Greene-Salvador
Martin-Oduya
White-Mottau/YYY
YYY=Scotty N looks good

Dean will be your 4th line center come playoff time. Jacques will continue to roll 4 lines, even in the playoffs. If the Devils are to go deep, their depth will be their strength.

Yea it would be great to get a center for that 2nd line, but Koivu? What does he really bring to the party?
Great leader. Distinguished career resume missing only a Stanley Cup implies hunger to win (think Neal Broten). Has 23 points in 37 games for .62 points per game (for comparison's sake, McAmmond has 9 in 21 for .43, Zubrus 7 in 20 for .35, R. Nieds 14 in 29 for .48).
His only real question marks are the Duck's asking price and his health, IMO.

as for zharkov/pelley for koivu, it's so hard to know what the trade deadline prices are anymore. last year, very few prospects got moved in deadline trades - it was either for draft picks or relatively established players. really lashoff, karsums, ryan wilson, and anssi salmela were the only 'prospects' moved, and the quotation marks are there for a reason.

Scotty is on a bad team. A very bad team. He wouldn't be asked to be Paul Martin here, he would be asked to take the lead of the second pairing and bring experience to a relatively green defense. I still like the move.
