Hurricanes listen
Any player headed for unrestricted free agency is available in Carolina, but the Hurricanes are getting lots of calls on a player that's under contract for next season.

Joni Pitkanen has another year on his deal at $4.5 million for next season. The Canes like him a lot and are not trying to move him in any way. Yet, the interest from other teams is so high for the puck-mover, one wonders if Carolina will be able to say no before March 3 if the offers are too good to resist. The 26-year-old leads all NHL players in ice time per game, averaging just over 27 minutes. There won't be many top-four defensemen moving before March 3, so the high interest in Pitkanen is reflective of a barren marketplace for that position.

always have been of joni he would really solidify our d and replace martin if he decides to defect to another team in the offseason. i'd part with eckford and a forward prospect without blinking a eye. with proper tautology he can still become a hell of a defenseman. he was predicted to be the next scott niedermayer during his draft year.

Just for the reasons you cited, I think they'll keep him. I would think lou might have interest in Niclas Wallin. He's older, having a crap year (then again who isn't on the canes)but would be a great addition. He has great wheels.

pitkanen roams all over the ice and 3 teams have already tried to turn him into an elite defenseman.

both those teams lack larry robinson and scott stevens.

we don't need another bottom pairing guy. the devils problem the past few years in the playoffs has not been our offense it has been our D. we do not have the bodies that can skate the puck out of our zone on a consistent basis. joni does that for us and he can get qb a pp.

Eckford for Pitkanen is a decent deal but you have to consider they will want more, most likely a draft pick as well. Eckford isn't a ready prospect so who knows if they would want a player to plug in as well.

PS they wouldn't want Mottau.

yeah let's just throw them a defenseman turning 25 next year as the centerpiece for a young, supposedly stud defenseman. you do realize that joni pitkanen and tyler eckford were only drafted 2 years apart, right?

Getting Joni Pitkanen would probably take Greene and a player from the Devils, the quality of which would be dependent on how desperate Carolina is to cut payroll. Not worth it, don't have the cap space to bring him in.

Yea...no to Pitkanen. We have Semi-Similar players - and to me the only real chance we have is to add a true top 3, top 2 top guy. If Pitkanen was that good, Carolina would want to build around him.

I would take a chance on Dion...I know you are firmly against this for a variety of reasons, all certainly valid - but I would take a chance on Dion. He might be the only one out there, I'd give a big trade for. I really think Dion still can be 'reformed' into a #1 defensemen.

I heard (I think on Network) that Whitney was asked to give a list of teams he was willing to waive his no-trade clause.

the devils don't have anywhere near the trade pieces to acquire either player. i also don't think dion phaneuf can be reformed into a #1 defenseman, but things like this have happened before. he is terrible in his own zone.

Like I said before... I'd go for Joe Corvo.

Our D is number one in the league right now. And that'll only get better when Martin comes back... Pressure will be taken off of Greene and Oduya and those guys can fly under the radar and play well.

Joe Corvo can be a second or third pairing defenseman but can also patrol the blue line on our power plan and let that shot rip that he has. It's a pretty hard slapper.

Corvo's cap hit is 2.62 and he's a UFA after this season.
