that's only roughly $3M cap prorated. they're taking back $6.4M cap prorated. this puts them over the cap.
Right but I'm not talking about cap hit, just respective skills and abilities of the players in question.

We’ve spent several months exploring scenarios with Kovy and his agent to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, and offered many lucrative packages in an attempt to meet his financial objectives. Unfortunately, we’ve reached an impasse and at this point he has declined all of our proposals and we can’t reasonably go any higher.

I listened to his entire press conference. He has no idea if he's going to be traded today, tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night, later, or at all. There was no indication in that conference, at all. Anything goes as far as I'm concerned.I'm sure the Thrashers are going to hang on to him for Friday's game against WSH. They play the Panthers on Saturday then have three days off.
EDIT:
“I asked [Waddell] if I’m going to play [Friday] and he said yes. So I just show up and do my job.”
This was said after today's practice. Got it from the Atlanta beat writer's blog.

That's dicey Crisis, if you're going to trade him you do it and NOT risk him being hurt. If he does get hurt, Waddel's fvcked royally.

and if he has a 3 goal, 9 shot night where he plays dominant, he might increase his value. it's a risk worth taking.

I don't care what happens, but I am taking a few hours away from this thread when the Super Bowl comes on!
I can't type well with hot wing sauce on my fingers anyway

Rumor is the Kovalchuk trade will be so crazy, he may end up playing in the superbowl!

At this point, though, would teams really be that surprised and say, "hey, this guy's actually pretty good! The ridiculous trade request Waddell threw at me yesterday is suddenly looking quite OK now that I know that Kovalchuk is actually a good player!"
Let's be honest, everyone in the NHL knows what Kovalchuk is bringing to the table. Waddell is risking much more by playing Kovalchuk than any possible gain (which as I just said is close to nil) from some super night he has.
