Gordie Howe played until he was 52. Kovalchuk's contract is obviously unbelievable because no one thinks he's going to want to play for $500k when he has tens of millions in the bank. I don't believe it either, nor do I believe it with the other long contracts that have been accepted. Some athletes will play as long as they can, or as long as they think they can win, for love of the game. It's impossible to know when Kovalchuk is 27 whether he'll be one of those players.

I hope this ends soon.

then why would hossa play for 750,000 when he is 42 or pronger playing for 525,000 when he is also 42. Its the fact that both of these deals were approved there for setting a precedent that has to be followed until a new cba can be negotiated

speculation is not a legal argument.
age is not the factor here. it is the dollars being spread over the term.

guys, and i'm not kidding here, what if we rally at championship plaza friday?

its an idea being tossed about on the other thread, but if we do it, i'm suggesting posters, and a lot of red, white and black, obviously no riot.

speculation is not an legal arguement. But prior precedents that have been set is example:Luongo, pronger, hossa contracts all being approved same with zetteberg contract which is the same structure

"With this deal being shot down for the obvious reason of cap circumvention does it drop the price for Kovalchuk? Does it send a message, a 'warning shot across the bow' to all other GMs and agents not to try this type of deal anymore? I say yes to both questions.

I think Lou did Gary a favour and deliberately went way, waaay over the edge on how this contracts works knowing full well that there was now way it would be approved. There are some rumblings that Lou even told reporters that he didn't think it would be approved.

In one fell swoop Lou may have put an end to these deals before there could be anymore. Furthermore he may have set a precedent and sent a message (via Gary) to any other 'superstar' player or greedy owner to keep your demands in check. "

Very interesting indeed, I think this guy nailed it right on the head. I think the NHL gave Lou yesterday to do the press conference so that Kovy would come out with his speech about winning and wanting to play in NJ being the best decision he could have made. Perhaps Lou brought in Marty, Parise, and the rest of the core guys (granted, Elias was already here) to hang out with Kovy for a few days while this whole thing blows over to ensure he stays a Devil and who knows, he might even be willing to drop his price a bit.

Lou would seriously be playing with fire if this was planned to get in the press conference before an official rejection when he knew it was coming ahead of time. If you were Kovalchuk or Grossman would you have any respect or ever want to deal with an organization that acted in bad faith? If there's even a bit of truth to this, don't be shocked if Kovalchuk walks away and if Grossman never does business with Lou again. Not to mention the fact that every free agent you ever want to sign (ahem Parise) would be very releuctant to signsign with the Devils or play for them a day longer than necessary.

Hello fellow American. This you should vote me. I leave power. Good. Thank you, thank you. If you vote me, I'm hot. What? Taxes, they'll be lower... son. The Democratic vote is the right thing to do Philadelphia, so do.
How do you spot risk? How do you avoid risk? And what makes it so risky?

could people PLEASE not post hockeybuzz links with the idea that there is anything relevant or sensible being said in there. while lou should have had some idea that the contract might be rejected, i doubt very much that he went ahead with the whole thing on the idea that it would definitely get rejected.

and yes daniel, no free agent will ever sign with new jersey ever.

The issue really in all of this, as it compares to the hossa and luongo contracts, is essentially the devils signed hossa to a 7 year contract worth 7 million at the end. This has never been done before, and never will. the lunogo contracts and hossa contracts include 2-3 years of smaller payments, which is not uncommon for nhl players to sign.

BIG TRADE RUMOR>

Another rumor that just broke is the Rangers are considering trading Marian Gaborik to the LA Kings and signing Kovalchuk. Very interesting rumor indeed. We all remember Gaborik had wanted to play in LA going into last summer's UFA period prior to signing in NY.

I agree that Lou wouldn't hold Kovalchuk as some kind of example with no intention of even retaining him. You'd have to have no intention of retaining him to do that to a guy.

If he had anything like that in mind he'd have told Grossman and Ilya - he'd have warned them and probably have had a contingency contract all drafted also with Grossman and Kovalchuk's input. You dont run a guy like that up a flag pole for kicks....

(but then again... maybe Kevin Costner IS Yuri the imbedded KGB agent...)
